when i was a freshman my parents got in an accident and i had to start taking care of my whole family. what i mean is that my chores got tripled, i needed to help my parents move through the house, and i had to walk my bro to school before i went. My school and his school are in 2 opposite directions.

i also wrote about how the envioronment i grew up in has shaped me to be a strong perservering leader and how people see me as a leader not because of my large frame ( i am 6'4) but because of the attidude and energy i generate when i am in the room.

how my parents accident coupled with my volunteering at the hospital has changed my outlook on life and how i found my true calling which is medicine because God has blessed me with intelligence and lots of empathy towards the needy and weak.

i also included in my essay a great quote from one of a famous surgeon (i am drawing a blank on his name right now) but it said " i was never the smartest in med school, but what i lacked in ability i made up with through discipline." i think this quote really applies to me and i explained why.

sorry, i disagree with the other two posters. Berkeley is a really good school and is not as easy to get into as people think. Your GPA is low for Berkeley, but your ACT is around their average, so I think you have a chance, but its not a high match.

i’m sorta in the same boat as you. Unfortunately, from what I can tell UC’s care MOST about your GPA. If you have a Naviance account, check out the scattergram for Berkeley. Students with mediocre test scores often get in because they have a 3.9 UW or 4.0 UW GPA. It really sucks, I have a 3.3 UW GPA and a 4.0 weighted GPA (same weighted as some kids with 3.9 UW GPAs in some cases). Despite my above average SAT score, I will probably get rejected. Your EC’s are a plus. If you wrote very convincing essays, you will have a decent shot at Berkeley. Good luck.

You’re good to go here. Maybe 50-80% chance (of course, I’ll then get about 10 posters after me flaming me for posting high chance percentages).

I want to say, “ACCEPTED”, just b/c you’ve had a tough couple of years. Your profile looks good, you’re in-state, etc. etc. But I’m not an admissions person. Good luck

Nothing is for sure at the UC’s. I hope you have a backup - just in case. Good luck.
(P.S. My personal opinion is that you’ll get in due to your extenuating cicumstances)

Your app looks pretty good, the GPA is a little on the low side (for UCB, not in general), but it looks like you made up for that with the high ACT score.

You’re personal statement seems very strong, you have pretty good EC’s and you’re instate.

I would say low reach, because the upper tier UC’s (L.A. and Berkley) are a crapshoot. Good luck!

On a side note do you know who said that quote in your personal statement? I really like it and it also applies to me.
