Work Experience:
- Confounded Oil Company with a family friend. I did all the startup technical work from setting up Oil's programs on the computer to finding prospective customers.
- Lab Aid at School

Others:
-about 500 hours of logged volunteering at Penn hospital
- helped setup Special Olympics at our school

I think my record is good expect for the fact that I really messed my soph year (3 B's) - dont know what happened, but I got straight A's freshman and junior yr and hopefully senior. Please let me know what my chances are at the schools above! Thanks!!

Strong overall, but nothing that would make you stand out, except for the oil company startup. If that was a major undertaking, then use it to your advantage. You shouldn't have a problem at CMU (unless you're applying to their CS program, in which case you have little chance), UM, and PSU. You have a pretty great shot at Duke, but don't take my word for this because it's a little skewed. I'm from Florida and Duke seems to like Floridians a whole lot. Why? No idea. The other schools are a tossup, as they always are.

Hey, I'm applying UPENN ED with hopes of premed as well, maybe we start the Penn2011 forum! Anyway, first of all, your sister doesn't get you legacy status, but nice try though. I would say you are a competitive applicant for three main reasons. First, you have very high standardized test scores, you have some pretty intense ECs and you have minority status. Where you lack is class rank. This is important to adcoms because they like to see how competitive you are in your own class. 25/1200 may put you in a high percentile, but having a 3.8/4.0 and being only 25 wreaks of grade inflation. If you apply early, you stand a good chance because ED adcoms tend to take apps with high sat scores. Of the list of ECs I would really push the big stuff in either essay form or supplamentary materials. For instance, I conducted research at the Cleveland Clinic and started my own business, so I'm writing about both in some essays that I'll send in my app. The key is to establish yourself as an individual. You seem to have a number of varied interests and talents, so the Penn adcom will favor that. Here is my opinion

UPENN (ED)- Reach, but good possibility
Carnegie Mellon- Match
John Hopkins- Reach, but better chance than Penn
PSU Honors- Match
University of Maryland- Safety
Duke- Reach
Northwestern-Reach, best possibility of the privates listed

That might be true, sorry for jumping the gun on that one, I really don't know anything about the Indian population at Penn, I kinda assumed it was the same at most private schools.

Siblings don't count as legacies? For some reason I always thought they did. I'm glad I found this out now...

I don't think that being 25th in your class (of 1200!) with a 3.8 GPA suggests grade inflation at all, but hey, what do I know? You have several leadership positions, but your ECs appear kind of scattered. Make it clear on your app that each is important to you. Otherwise, you have good test scores and your many hours of volunteer work at a hospital show that you have dedication to medicine. You have a decent chance at all of your schools (based on my limited experience) and going ED at Penn is a good idea.

When I said grade inflation, this is what I was thinking
If the uw gpa is 3.8 and the highest is 4.0, that means that 24 people make up that .2 assuming the Val got straight A's. If that many people cover only that short of a range, I would think there might be some generous grades given. I don't think there is anything wrong with a 3.8 b/c thats pretty darn competitive but I can only go by my own experience when it comes to class rank. If you ask me, its all a faulty system when comparing different schools, but thats the only way the adcoms know how.

-Cofounded the oil company, but I was not sure if I should include it because it doesn't really relate to the sciences, which is what I'm aiming for. Back in the summer of 9th grade, I auctally started up an ebay business to help local shop owners sell their products globally and ended up making alot of money. Around then I wanted to do something related to business but after going to the biomedical research camp, I def. wanted to go into medicine!

-My ECs are sort of scattered mainly because our school has so many clubs to offer.

-As for being Indian, He pretty much goes aganist me since Penn was loaded with Indians and Asians when I went there.

-It was auctally AP Psychology, I was in a rush to get the list finished!

-I don't think there is alot of grade inflation at my school. I mean during soph year I got 3 B's which killed my class rank. The people ahead of me got straight A's throughout all 3 years and took APs soph year. But we always tend to have 4 or 5 kids be the valedictorian. I'm pretty sure my class rank be about 12 or 14 / 1200 by end of first semester senior year.

I see what you mean about the grade inflation coment. Thats really interesting that you have multiple valadictorians. Anyway, I think you should put everything on your app, schools like to see sundry students!!!

Why wouldn't you include something that shows initiative, dedication, a good work ethic, etc (the oil company, in case you were wondering what I was talking about)? Just because it doesn't relate to your major doesn't mean you shouldn't put it. If that was the case, I'd be royally screwed in the admissions process.

UPENN (ED) -reach but more doable with the ED about 25-45%
Carnegie Mellon- match if not engineering or computer science 60-75%
John Hopkins- reach because premed at the best med school is tough 45-65%
PSU Honors- some what of a reach 50% but i dont know much about it
University of Maryland- safety 100%
Duke- reach 20-40% depending on essays
Northwestern- rech, but not that much unless the med program then you may still get into the school, but about 5% at the med program.

o and your sister may not give you the same alumni status as people whos parents are grads, it still puts you in a better position than people with no connection to the college at all
