Chances at Pomona?

(I can't believe I'm actually posting a chances thread, but here goes...)

What are my chances at Pomona?

I'm a senior (female) at a competitive private high school in New Jersey. There are about 100 students in each grade, and each year, most of them go on to highly ranked colleges.

My school does not rank. They also don't publish GPA; rather, the college sees a transcript (this GPA is just for reference). My school is on a trimester system, but the only thing on the transcript is final grades.

When classifying colleges as "far reach/reach/possible (match)/likely (safety)", my school does it by the amount of students with academic profiles similar to yours have gotten in (in the past 5 or so years) to said college. Far reach- no students with similar academic profiles have gotten in; reach- few students have gotten in; possible- some students; likely- most students. My counselor classified Pomona as a reach for me.

My GPA (unweighted) is 3.62 out of 4.0. (school doesn't weight GPA)

Senior year courses and grades-
AP Physics B (school does not offer AP Physics C)- A-
AP Calculus AB/BC (at my school, most students take Calc AB and then Calc BC; but some, like me, take AB/BC, which is an accelerated version, combining both classes into one year- I'll be taking the BC exam in the spring)- currently have A-, should come up to an A
English 12 (standard senior year English class)- B+
Biotechnology- A
AP/IB French Language (will take AP exam)- expecting B/B+, but the teacher is pretty unpredictable
IB Visual Arts (HL)- A

ACT (only taken once)-
Composite- 34
Science- 36
Math- 33
English- 35
Reading- 32
Essay- 10

SAT2s-
Math1- 750
Math2- 770
Physics- 750

Other-
-National Merit Commended Student
-4 year varsity swimmer (varsity letter all 4 years)
(My other ECs are mainly dance, music, writing, and clubs.)

My counselor says my Common App essay is very strong. He says he's writing me a great rec. My other recs are from my Chem(gr9)/AP Enviro (gr11) teacher, my Geometry Honors(gr9)/Pre-Calc Honors (gr11) teacher, and my art teacher (Painting- gr9, Drawing- gr10, IB Art HL- gr11-12). I have done very well in all of these classes; I chose these teachers because they all know me well (especially my art teacher).

On the Pomona supplement, it asks which languages you speak other than English, and I am saying I speak French comfortably.

Also on the supplement- I am definitely doing one of the optional essays, probably the first one.

Also, I am the third generation of people in my family at Pomona. My grandmother went there (did not graduate from Pomona- had to transfer to UC-Berkley for financial reasons, but considered Pomona her alma mater and definitely gave some money there) and my aunt went there. My aunt's ex-husband also graduated from Pomona, and I know he's given a lot of money to Pomona. He is writing me an additional letter of rec. Will any of this help?

So... what are my chances at Pomona?

um i think it’s pretty tough b/c you’re oos. reach. in state i’d say in.

chance back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/603590-i-just-found-out-i-f-d-up-last-thread-damn.html

GSW Fan- Pomona is a private college. Does OOS even matter?

I think it’s a low reach/high match for you. You have good scores, but your GPA is slightly below the average. The legacy and additional essay should help. If you applied ED, I say you’re probably in.

OOS has nothing to do with it. Some people get confused because of Cal Poly in Pomona.

Have you taken any other AP tests?
Over all I think you are in the right range for acceptance. I don’t know how many kids apply from your state to gage what your competition is.
I was surprised to find that there was a considerable population from the northeast. Is Pomona on the radar screen for people applying to places like Amherst or Williams?

Good luck.

twomules- I took AP Enviro last year and got a 4. My school really doesn’t offer a lot of APs.

Out of my class of ~100, I think there are 3 other people (all guys) applying to Pomona (though 1 of those might actually be applying to Claremont McKenna, not Pomona). 1 probably gets better grades than me; the other 2 are similar to me, maybe slightly lower grades.

I didn’t know that Pomona had a significant northeast population.

Don’t listen to GSW Fan. He doesn’t even read your thread; just hopes you’ll chance him back.

GPA = below average
Scores = Good
EC’s = Good, but nothing spectacular
Legacy = will help…a lot

You’ve got a high match for you here, buddy. I’d say 60% chance of acceptance. Good work, and good luck.

I’ll probably be competing with you, so why don’t you chance me as well?
CHANCE??? Pinky-promise to chance back!!

The profile of the class of 2012 says that 23% of the students are from the northeast. It does not break it down further by state.

If your school doesn’t offer a lot of APs, don’t obsess about it. The school profile that goes with your application will let the admissions people know this.

Ehhh, You have good test scored, but I go to a very competitive public school in NJ, Top 5 in the state and only one kid from my school got in and they had a 4.6 GPA and 2300 on the SATS, but you may still get in because you applied in advance.

EDIT:
Your a legacy, you should have a much easier time with apps than average students

Echo049- thanks for the reply. I’d be happy to chance you- what’s the link?

NKbaseballbum18- Done :)

I’d really wonder about someone getting a B in French claiming to speak it, you may want to reconsider.
