Chances at Princeton, MIT, UC Berkley or suggestions?

Hey Guys,
I wanted to know what u think my chances for these places are, my case is not that typical.

SAT:740 M, 580V (yea... I know my verbal is pretty low)
SATII:800 MIIC, 720 Physics, 600 Writing
Ranking: 2/~650
Senior Courses :
AP Literature & Comp.
AP European History
AP Government & (Economics (2nd sem.))
AP Physics C
AP Computer Science AB
AP Calculus BC
Research Math class
First Quarter Grades: "A" in all of them.

GPA: 3.79 uw ~5.5 w

I really like chemistry so i did a research internship in a chemist's lab junior year and did a research project

hmm, unless you have some secret hook, princeton and mit are big reaches for you, uc berkley is more of a low reach/match, u need more matches and safties lol...the reason i say this is because your writing & verbal scores are dismal, i see that you are ranked 2 but it is still the communciation standards that you can provide to the university (writing and verbal)...ah man honestly your case is wierd, 2nd rank with a 580 and 600! (unless you moved to america or english is not ur first lang) Umm, i think you should ask someone for more matches and safties, hopefully that somewhat helps...=)

umm.. accidently presssed the "post quick reply" too quickly... finishing my sentence:

I competed in Siemens Westinghouse and became a Siemens Westinghouse SemiFinalist.

I'm not sure it helps but I'm a hispanic female... so??

xindianx did u read my second post? what do u think now?

still, ur verbal grades are holding u back, so is the writing

retake and it's all good

yea.. but which one should I retake (or is more important) my verbal SAT or Writing. And if I do retake it and I make like 680 (100 pt increase) will it really make a difference?
I really appreciate everyone's opinion.

Yeah it really really will make a difference if you can bring up the verbal even 50 pts. Writing is not AS important. My advice is to study vocab a lot. If you can get it up 50pts (100 would be amazing), you have a very strong chance at these.

thanks slipper1234, but does the majority of CCers agree the Verbal retake is more important?
really appreciate answer since SAT reg. deadline is TODAY .. thanks

yeah, i agree with slipper, you should register for the sat and boost your verbal score, a high writing score is just something that comes naturally to english born speakers and individuals that are precise on their grammer and essay strategies...so yeah if you can boost up your verbal about 70-80 pts it should def. put some weight of your shoulders, and the colleges will understand your low verbal & writing score because you are hispanic, it's just that a 580 is like they can reject you easier if you know what i mean, if u can kick it up a notch with the verbal sat i score it'll make them look twice for admission =)...alsooo you have all of winter break to study for the exam, and if you are keen on scoring high i am sure you will use your time wisely and efficiently =)

ps..sorry about my other post, i think i may have made a pre-judgement on your case, the siemens semi-finalist, your other great ec's (1200+ is CRAZY dude lol), and the fact that your hispanic (im not being racist just realistic in that if you emphasize in any one of your essays of your difficulties as a hispanic american and that you are amazing in mathematics but your english is still gradually improving) will help you tremendously, soo yeah, good luck =)

Thanks Guys.
xindianx: Great idea for the essay.. I forgot to mention that actually. Yea I'm retaking it and hopefully reading Candide will also help boost my score (besides practice tests)

Bump..

Does anyone have an idea what kind of chance I have currently with these stats in like percent wise 0<A<5% not much of a chance,5<B <25% chance, 25<C<50% decent chance, 50<D<75% good chance.

Has anyone applied to these institutions with similar stats/ situation?
I appreciate ur answers.

for MIT, i would say 10% chance. unless you are a athlete or something.
yu have to apply some lower school for safety purpose.

Actually, you have a really good chance at getting into your top choices, at least at MIT because I can only speak for MIT. I think dajiang is just giving you a hard time. From someone who was once in your position, wondering if I'll get in, I'm now at MIT, and your credentials seem quite impressive already. I'll agree the verbal can be upped a bit, but all else considered, you're a competitive candidate. Siemens is good and your other commitments seem good too. Show commitment, passion, character in your app and best of luck! Sports are not necessary to stand out because of your ethnicity. Although I usually hate to factor ethnicity into admissions, it can't be denied that a being a hispanic female can help lots.

o hello trinity04, i am applying to MIT. so besides 4700/4800 on SATs and lots of EAs.
what else i should do, please help me.

pearl your ECs seem focused and show dedication, your rank/gpa is great, all i see holding you back is that verbal, however being hispanic maybe there is some leeway? Either way, add my name to the list that recommends you take sat again, 50 points could easily mean the difference (for mit/princeton, you have a very good chance at berkley).

Thanks everyone for your answers (and I'm practicing )
Trinity: would you know about what percent of MIT freshmen have done science or math research before?

dajiang--the SAT numbers and numerous ECs can only get you so far. From what I understand, MIT has 5 categories by which they rank students from 1-5. They stick you in a database and give you an overall rating and base admissions on that. You seem to have the scores and ecs. Now, just show them who you are on your application. The admissions process is very arbitrary. If the admit officer likes you, you're in. Warning--I'm only speaking from personal experience, so this might all be wrong. Anyways, tell stories about yourself that really shows who you are. They are looking for students who love to learn, who are willing to be challenged, who have character. Because I can tell you, it's tough. You also hear advice about showing passion on apps. I didn't have one, and still haven't found one. They'll see through a fake/fluff story. So tell something that hits home for you or impacted you, even something small, because most likely, it will impact them also. Also, I have heard that to keep MIT's reputation as a science/math/tech school. They're trying to fit the incoming students into the typical profile of an MIT student. Shrug. You can contact me if you want help on the application....due soon i think. the email should be in my profile.

Pearl--I can't tell you the percentage of students who have had experience. Though I can say that out of my close circle of 10 friends, only 1 has done significant research in a lab. 2 Others have done "research" where they sat on their butts and did nothing, so they say. apps are like resumes. You can make small things sound good. I had no research experience, at all. I thought everyone at MIT must have some experience, but you would be surprised. Although, those who do have significant research can really astound you with their brilliance.

On a last note...if you get in, congrats!! I hope you choose to come to MIT!

Sorry this is so long! Hope it helped.

trinity04
thanks a lot.MIT is my dream school and............ merry chritmas

christmas, i mean

I think you have a pretty good chance at all three schools actually. Mainly because I had a hispanic friend last year who got into Princeton, M.I.T., UCBerkeley, UCLA, University of Chicago, UPenn, Stanford, Columbia, and Dartmouth with an SAT score of 1220 (his highest score). Your SAT II scores are slightly better than his as well. Also I think being a Siemens Westinghouse SemiFinalist will help your application a lot! Good luck! :)
