Chances at Princeton, Stanford, etc.

I understand that college acceptances are not "predictable," but please try to give me some input. I'm also not trying to boast. I just want honest opinions. Thanks! (first time I've tried this, btw)

Senior, female, live in MD, USA
3.92 GPA UW, 4.76 W (4.0 in senior year so far)

1600 SAT
800 Math IIC, 740 Chem, 800 Writing

APs: Eng Lang - 4; World History: 5; Microecon: 4; Macroecon: 4; Calc BC: 5; Chem - 4

decent essay (EXCELLENT common app essay, though) and excellent recs (2 teachers and research mentor). Counselor rec is mediocre. This is my first year having her, so she doesn't know me too well xp

EC's. - founder and president of a few clubs (math team, physics team, model un, key club), violin for 8 years (county orchestra, competitions, awards, common app essay was on this topic - I think my passion really shines through), varsity tennis, web-designer for 5 years (very accomplished, I think, so I'm submitting a portfolio), research over the summer (submitted paper to Intel and to some colleges that emphasize research), published poetry, some other minor stuff which I'm debating whether I should include

Awards: National Merit Semifinalist (236/240), erm... not much, mainly regional science and violin awards. Enough to fill the app. spaces, lol.

Colleges: A year ago, I really wanted to get into economics and business (hence the APs that I've taken). Penn was my top-choice. I'm now more interested in the sciences (my research project had to do with this), so I'm focusing more on Princeton and Stanford, both of which have excellent research opportunities with distinguished faculty in the sciences. The colleges that I'm applying to this year are as follows in my "preferance" order(this cannot be changed, since I've already finalized it with my counselor):

Stanford
Princeton
Penn
MIT (deferred early :()
Yale (har har. my chances are slim to none, but giving it a try :))
Cornell
Duke
Johns Hopkins
A few state schools

If you've read up to this point, then congradulations! Sorry about writing so much and thanks for any input!!

eek - I forgot to mention that I'm also very passionate about volunteering. I've accumulated over 400 hours working at a hospital and a variety of other places.

erm. bump?

I'm really NOT confident about myself at all because of my MIT rejection, so please say something .....

For Stanford, I would really emphasis your passion for science and music, or whatever else you have passion in. Stats are important, but your personality is even more important.

I've heard of kids who have gotten into Cornell with a good schedule and a 1600 before, so don't stress too much there. Duke really emphasizes on E.C., that's how one of my friends got in. The other got in because of his brain.

Hey kinetic, you said were going to submit a portfolio of your web design work? I've also done a lot of web design, but I didn't know I could do that! How are you planning to show your work?

Yeah... I definitely tried to emphasize my passion for music and the arts (the subject of my big essay, actually). I also wrote about science in my short answer. finger crossed for Stanford

questo44: I plan on taking screen caps and printing them out like art pieces. It'll take a LOT of ink, but hopefully, it will be worth it :)

That's cool. So you'll send the screenshots to the colleges in a separate envelope? I'm applying online, so i don't have a smooth way of sending extra materials. Also, I'm really into video editing...do you think a DVD with some clips of my movies would be a good idea? I know some schools (i.e. Stanford) don't like extra materials like this. Do you think that's true for most schools?

I think you should send it in as long as the school doesn't say don't send us stuff. I'm not sure about it though. maybe ask your counselor??

...........wwooooooooooooowwwww..................

good chances

Stanford- nearly impossible reach
Princeton- nearly impossible reach
Penn- big reach
MIT (deferred early )- nearly impossible reach (since you were deferred, they dont' want ya)
Yale- nearly impossible reach
Cornell- big reach
Duke- big reach
Johns Hopkins- big reach
A few state schools

look at some more realistic choices. you're smart, but everyone is smart applying to those schools.

After looking through the post with stats for people deferred/rejected from Stanford, I've resolved to just keeping my fingers crossed :)

But, I personally don't think JHU is a big reach at all. I was asked to conduct research at JPL, so there's gotta be something about me that makes me a good candidate. Erm... everything else is a lottery from here :</p>

hmm...you're probably right.

ignore ranger, he has made the same comments on like 10 people's posts.
obviously those are not all nearly impossible reaches. Here's a more accurate assesment:

Stanford-- Slight Reach
Princeton--Slight Reach
MIT--Slight Reach
Yale--Slight Reach (perhaps better if your common app essay is really that awesome)
Cornell--Match (a really good match, if you don't make cornell I'd be shocked)
Duke--Match
Johns Hopkins--Match/Safety

if you get rejected from MIT early, yale isn't a slight reach. get realistic! honestly.

Read ... she interpreted her deferral to mean rejection. She didn't get outright rejected.

Joey

oops. I was deferred, not rejected. I was just in a depressed mood when I typed that (and I can't go back and edit the comment now).

I'll still need a lot of luck, but I guess that's the same with everyone with stats like mine :) Oooh, and I just found out that my best friend got into Stanford, so there's another reason.

Also, about the JPL thing, I later turned them down because of a better (paid, heh) research opportunity.

ranger stop trying to intimidate people and prevent them from applying to the top schools. If Princeton Stanford and Yale are nearly impossible for a 3940/4000 with a nearly perfect unweighted gpa, who should bother applying then

I agree, ranger is way too negative.

Even though the chances of my getting into top schools are slim-to-none, I'm applying anyway :) Ranger can't get me down, lol.

I don't know how much this might help me, but I retook the writing SATII (getting an 800) AFTER I was deferred from MIT. What do you think?

omg..ranger29 is retarded...he only puts negative comments to discourage ppl. I hate those people.
