Hey guys, I'm a rising senior and I'd just like to know what the CC community thinks of my chances at Princeton, or any Ivy League as a matter of fact. Oh, and stanford too i guess. Sorry for the deceptive title. =/

I know there are a lot of sports related things.. but.. hey! I love sports.
=] Thank you guys who are kind enough to respond! and not be mean.

You have as good a chance as one could have… Best of luck(:

You might have a shot if your shoulder heals from patting yourself on the back so much.

“do I have a shot?” Really?

Your chances probably improve greatly if you can get the baseball coach’s attention.

I don’t have the slightest idea how you do that.

Hey OP,

Have you filled out the recruitment form on Princeton’s website? It sounds like there are a lot of schools you’re interested in. Be sure to fill out the recruitment forms for each school if you think you want to play baseball in college. You sound pretty awesome!

Haha thank you very much! Mmmm I didn’t go to any showcases unfortunately, so my chancnes playing baseball aren’t that good. @ sbjdorlo =] thanks dude! @ EliKresses, thanks! @Sikorsky. =] i’m working on itt. LOL @T26E4 … haha I didn’t do this to make myself feel good, I wanted to know what other people thought of my chances! Thanks for reading it though! Sorry the thread didn’t make you so happy… =/

I’d say you have a really good shot. Your test scores are impeccable and princeton will understand the lack of availability of classes that you had.

Thank you mexicanmon44 for taking the time to read this! I know its quite a long list of things. =]

Hey there; I happened to notice your thread in the Athletic Recruits forum and find your situation rather interesting because in some ways it paralleled mine. I was also a straight As + 2400 kid who sought college recruitment for baseball, and I ended up getting recruited by the gamut of Ivies and went with the Princeton Tigers. If you really want to play D1 baseball at a top academic institution, try to sign up for Headfirst/GPA camps and for camps of the schools in which you are most interested (Headfirst/GPA camps tend to garner preliminary attention which solidifies into offers following specific college camps). Just as importantly, shoot emails out to every school in which you are even marginally interested for baseball (assistant coaches/recruiting coordinators) professing your interest as well as your summer schedule. Without intent to disparage previous posts, filling out college recruitment forms, unless asked specifically by a coach, isn’t a productive way of spending your time.

You are behind the curve right now but you still have ample time to find yourself a solid college opportunity, if the talent and will are there. I’m a left-handed pitcher; for me, it was pretty easy to gauge at what level I would be able to play with velocity readings as well as interest reciprocated by coaches after basically one camp. Being a position player is always trickier; you need to show your best stuff at the right time, since it’s harder to measure your tools and skill-set without concrete measurements other than your 60 time. If you mash, there will be a spot for you somewhere (be sure to also look at NESCAC/top academic D3 schools as their timetable is shifted back and your best bet at this point is probably performing well at a Headfirst/GPA Camp later in the summer and garnering their attention). The more important thing is your will to play at the next level. After my sophomore year in high school, I admittedly saw baseball as a means to college entrance, in part, and somewhat ironically, because I was not very good (I was coming off a nagging injury and was throwing mid/high-70s at the time). Now, soon entering my freshman year at Princeton and throwing a good 12-13 mph harder, I strive to get drafted after my junior/senior year and extend my career to the highest possible level of which I am capable. I don’t know how it is for you, and certainly you don’t need to have professional aspirations to succeed, but just make sure that you truly want to play at the next level (and also keep in mind that D1 and D3 baseball have significant differences in time commitment) before you take any steps in this process.

If you aren’t really looking to play, well, that’s alright too! Your chances look relatively good to the average candidate of any top school and I’m sure you’ll end up somewhere nice.

Hey monstor344! Thank you for taking the time to write such a lengthy response. I don’t know if I really have a chance at an Ivy anymore for baseball because all of the Headfirst/GPA camps are now on the east coast. I missed my last chance for a showcase because of my science internship. If you happen to read this, do you mind answering some questions I might have about the team? I’ve heard Princeton is incredibly good. I didn’t realize I could get recruited until this year, as it was my first on Varsity. I too admit that I partly would want to get recruited to have a better chance to go to an amazing school, but I would also love to get a chance to play at a higher level than high school. Haha hopefully I can mash! We’ll see how I do next season. Final question! You mentioned emailing the assistant coaches/recruitment coordinators. Should I not be trying to email the head coaches and direct my emails toward them instead? Thanks in advance, and thanks again for taking time to write your response and read my thread.

Generally speaking, you should email the assistants/recruiting coordinators. They deal with the bulk of the recruiting process whereas the head coach tends to have a litany of other, more immediate things to take care of; if you can’t email the assistant/recruiting coach for whatever reason then try the head coach (or even CC the head coach while emailing the assistant/recruiting guy) but just keep in mind that you are less likely to get a response from the head coach.

You are right; at this time you are a bit late on everything, which is why your best shot is with the D3s at this point, although I feel like you might just be best off applying the regular way to schools and then pursue walking-on as your academics are strong enough to get you into great schools without the athletics hook. Princeton is pretty good; they made NCAA Regionals this year and I’m really excited to be joining them. I do know that they have walk-on players that have played integral parts in their success. But yeah, feel free to shoot me any more questions you have, even though I don’t have all that much insight to offer as I’m not even there yet! :)

Oooh. Haha alright, thank you so much! Do you have an aim or gmail, or a chat service of somesort to maybe facilitate the question asking? I promise not to annoy you TOO much!

Update: I got 5’s on English Language, Physics, Computer Science, and Psychology. Psychology was a self study. =] this is a bump masked in an update.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE ESSAYS! Make sure you get help from everyone and anyone you know.

bump? lawl.
