Rice loves leadership. Your new scores are a little low, but the old ones will likely get consideration (ask Rice). Since you are in Texas and top 10%, UT is a dead lock safety.

does anyone know how UT consider people for their honor programs. I think I read somewhere that ranking is "everything"

Don't know, sorry.

i got into both schools Rice and Cornell (attending), and I think with your old score, you are good to go for both places. If you are from Texas, your chances at Rice go down the drain b/c they accept 19 percent of applicants from Texas, but out of state, 40 percent, it is much easier. Therefore, on paper, Rice looks as selective as Duke, but for out of state applicants, it is much easier to get into Rice, whereas Duke, it is easier to get in in-state (carolinas) and harder out of state.

How do you get that logic?
19% - Texans
40% - Out of State
40/49 = .81% per state excluding Texas

Rice is my reach, too, OP.

um, it was printed in the Rice Thrasher, go search for it, and this information has been verified a million times on CC.

Texans are simply more familiar with Rice and therefore more likely to apply. With this a lot more underqualified applicants will send applications, while selectivity and standards for Rice's applicants are same for residents and out-of-staters. The fact that only 19% of applicants get in from Texas means the applicant pool for Texas residents is considerably weaker than from out-of-staters, which tend to be students who have done outside research and come to the conclusion that Rice is actually a good school. I know in California it's certainly not a brand name school, so the underachiever will have never heard of it and only the top students will apply. It's not any easier to get into Rice from out-of-state- show me some statistics that compares Texas residents' test scores to OOS'ers and I'll believe you.

To the OP, you have a decent shot at Rice, though I hope you have some academic honors to compliment your EC's. By going into the sciences, your chances are lowered slightly.. best of luck,

TTG

thanks for all the replies!

yea. I understand chances that rice accepts me goes down since I'm from Texas & actually only live 40 minutes away. Kind of hoping ED will help me a little b/c I really like Rice.
Now does academic honors mean stuff like taking honor courses or like nat'l merit, honor roll, or some physical honor like that?

If anyone has any insight on UT honors programs PLEASE post. thanks

Question: For applications, does Rice or Cornell favor own application or the Common App?

B-U-M-P that spells BUMP! haha

I'd say you're fine. Your SAT score, particulary old one is just fine.
