Chances at RPI, WPI, BU, Northeastern, UMass

Thank you.

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Immigrant from Southeastern Europe. Lived in the States for 4.5 yrs.
White Male

SAT I
1st time -- 680M 570V
2nd time -- 680M 690V

Should I retake them in January?

I feel way smarter than a 680 in math and probably do not deserve the 690 in verbal that I got, but I am not complaining. Probably some sort of a unexplicable phenomena, like why do they ALWAYS land on the peanut butter side.

SAT IIs:
Math IIC: 740 (started shaking when the test started) retaking in December
Physics: Should get a 700+ (keyword: should)
Writing: I consider myself a pretty good writer, should be able by some miracle too pull off a 620+

GPA: 3.860
Class rank: 14/(284(?))
Been a little lazy in high school.

Will have 4 APs by end of HS.
Taken APUSH exam, got a 4.

Nearly all honors AP classes since freshman year (was badly misplaced freshman year, becaue it was my first full year of school in the US)

Senior year classes & grades:
AP Calculus: 94
AP Physics C: 96
AP English: 100 (class is really easy)
French IV: 95
Chemistry: 86 (hw is part of the grade and I refuse to do it because I consider it unnecessary)

EC's:
Foreign Language Club
Mathletes
Tennis (since 10th grade -- playing V)
Soccer (only in 10th grade)
NHS

Out-of-school:
Co-founded a small NP organization (IRS 501(c)3 tax-exempt status pending)
Worked as a cashier since 10th grade, about 20-25 hrs/week
Ran friend's store (managed personnel, expenses, kept track of cash and alike) for 2 weeks

Currently weighing the essay topic between being shown as a strong leader with ingenuity or describe difficulties in moving from Europe to here

Recs should be good/great.

What other schools in the NE I should look at?

I would say in at all.
You can also try BC, Tufts, Holy Cross, Providence

I was thinking about Tufts, to add in a far reach Ivy-style school. Thought it out between BC and BU, picked BU. Providence is a bit far.

Holy Cross - no because I'm not Christian.

Thank you.

You seem to have a decent shot for Tufts, probably even more so if you applied ED (especially for engineers, since they have a higher admit rate).

"Chemistry: 86 (hw is part of the grade and I refuse to do it because I consider it unnecessary)"

Please please please lower your standards and do the homework just this once. Your senior year will be very important - especially if you apply to a reach such as Tufts.

Your list is very reasonable - I would also say in everywhere. Make sure you review grammer before Writing - my son is having to retake because of the wretched MC's.

I have already upped my Chemistry grade to a 96. If I decide to apply to Tufts (will decide Monday) I will "get down with homework" and occasionally do it. Right now I don't do any whatsoever excepts essays for English and French.

I have talked to the teacher and she understands where I stand with homework, but the class is a SOPHOMORE class that I skipped to take probably the hardest class in school - IPP (Integrated Pre-Calculus and Physics) where you get force fed functions limits and AP Physics so you're ready for AP Calculus and AP Physics.

I REALLY appreacciate your input. Before I wasn't even considering Tufts, and was very doubftul that I'll get into RPI.

You are a very strong candidate at RPI. Does your school give the Rennselear Medal (sorry, I really can't spell)? If so, mention to someone at the school that you are interested in RPI. Its worth about 17K per year. Not chump change.

Yes, the school does give the Rensselear Medal, and my best friend won it. He deserves it more than I do. He is better at math than I am, we are same in Newtonian Mechanics & E & M, I am better than him at Quantum Mechanics (not that any of this is relevant).

I was glad he won it and not the perfect 1600 valedectorian with a 4.0 UW GPA who happens to be a TA for AP Bio and with a slew of 5s and 800s.

Good for your friend! That means someone in your science department likes him, and will give him excellent rec's . Tell him congrat's from Ohio. Also, both of you should interview even if it is only optional, since you both seem to have personalities. When you are competing with perfection on paper, presenting your living, breathing self can really help.

Have you visited Tufts? You should if you want to make the decision to apply here, for our campus (education and student body) is quite something special. The admissions office takes into consideration how much you want to go to Tufts as a factor in letting you in or not.
