Ryckot- I would say that you would have a fantastic chance for an Old Gold Scholarship, ($3,000/year, renewable). The CLAS also offers a couple of targeted scholarships for specific science fields for which you should apply. However, realistically, for a Presidential Scholarship, your ACT is too low. I’d recommend re-taking it to get it up to a 34 or 35. Good luck!

I think you have a great chance! We have VERY similar stats (Asian, 3.98 GPA, 33 ACT) and I got the Presidential Scholarship. Only thing is, I’m OOS. But don’t be afraid to apply!

thanks! but btw i definitely am planning on retaking the test anyways. i’ll be shooting for a 35. will a 35 solidify my chances at Presidential? and, just wondering, are there any full-ride or full-tuition scholarships?

Here’s what we were told by two advisors, one in admissions and one in the Honors program. They both told the same story.

Your application makes you eligible first for the Old Gold scholarship then the Presidential. In other words, they Presidentials are chosen from the pool already awarded the Old Gold. There are not two pools, there are one.

The quality of your ESSAY is the main determinant. Your stats are good but they are the same as everyone else in the pool. The awards are not made based on stats. You are encouraged to write your essay about something unique, something that individualizes you. Something that sets you apart from the others. Something with a little humor, personality.

I am no expert but with your stats and a decent essay you should get the Old Gold. So far, so good. We were told that there is nothing that clearly distinguishes the Presidential awardees from the rest of the Old Golds - it’s almost a matter of chance.

Before taking the ACT again I would do two things: 1) find the page on UI’s website that clearly lays out the scholarships and the requirements to get them. I don’t believe 35 makes you any more eligible than 33 and 2) call your admissions person to further understand the award process to confirm what I’ve said here.

the page you need is here :[Scholarships for First-Year Students - Undergraduate Admissions - The University of Iowa](http://www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/scholarships/first-year.htm)

Good info Beast. All I can add is that of the 4 students (in-state) we have known who received the Presidential, two had 36 and two had 35 on the ACT. They probably had great essays as well.

Congrats AmyLily on your Presidential!

thanks everyone. this is super helpful.
