hello everyone, just wanted your opinions on whether or not you think i can get into either UT or A&M. If you can... please recommend some schools I would REALLY appreciate it,thanks! i'm pretty sure i'm not a top %10 so here is some info...

Hispanic male from TX I'm currently a junior,
first in my family to go to college
SAT- 1250
AP English 3 & 4, AP US History and Government every other class i've taken in high school has been preAP
GPA- currentlybetween 3.0-3.3 i haven't checked during this semester
Foreign Language- German I and II, only ones offered at my school
EC-
Band. 4 years, section leader 10th and 11th grades, drum major of the band senior year. Freshman year- made it to the region freshman band. Sophomore year- made it to the high school all-region and didn't advance anymore. junior year- advanced up to the area level of competition, missed all-state by one point. senior year- member of the texas all-state band. (got better every year).

volunteered at local hospital summer of 10th grade, and worked summer of junior year...

any help would be greatly appreciated... thx!

I think you will get into both schools. What is your class rank? If you take the SAT again, I bet you can raise the score. I would look at Rice, too. Being the first in your family to go to college will help you with admissions.

thank you both for your input! MomofWildChild, I'm not sure what my class rank is, I'm pretty sure that I'm in the top 15% of my class of about 450. I'll have to check this week. I've been taking saturday courses for the SAT, I hope I can raise it. Rice sounds amazing to me, but it would be a long reach dont you think? I should try though, thanks. briarbrad, I can try my hardest but I don't know if that will even get me up there to the top 10%... thank you though!

If you are not top 10% i do not think you will make it into UT considering my friend was top 12% witha 1320 and got rejected but i will say A&M is a good bet..

No, German is not the only foreign language offered at my school. Although if you take German, only I and II are offered now. Can someone recommend some universities which they think will accept me? My first choice is UT but I want to apply to more schools because I know my chances aren't that great for UT. thanks!

You are an URM with excellent stats and you are first-generation in your family to attend college. You WILL get into the Texas schools. I would check into some of the LACs (liberal arts colleges) in the east that offer good financial aid packages and merit money.

Does anyone think i might have a good chance of getting into rice? I know it's obviously a biiiig reach, but worth a try? Maybe if I join the music program?

I'd say the fact that you're a Drum Major and obviously dedicated to band will be a big perk in the eyes of admissions committes. The first generation college student is a big perk too. I don't know much about Rice, but I would definitely give it a shot. What do you have to lose?

I think you have a good chance at Rice, but don't count on the music program. Rice has a conservatory level music school but the marching band is called the MOB and is open to anyone- meaning you don't have to be able to play an instrument! You have excellent stats for a URM and a first-gen college student.

thanks for the adivce. gator: you're right :) What do I have to lose? heh. thanks. MomofWildchild: I won't count on the music program after all, so far I only have UT A&M and Rice in my list of schools to apply to. I'm also thinking of the University of North Texas, i KNOW the music program there is incredible. Does anyone have any other recommendations for schools to apply to?

Ok, so you are an all-stater in texas. Is that 5A, 4A, 3A, etc? If its 5A, id say you are in to most any music program you want, including Rice's. 5A Texas all-state means alot and will get you far if you keep doing music.

How are you a senior year all-stater, but a junior in high school? Maybe I just don't understand how music rankings work because no one else raised a flag.

Most schools will give you scholarships based on music if you play in a number of there ensembles. You don't necessarily have to major in music, but you are usually required to be in their wind ensemble or orchestra or another ensemble so that you contribute to the program their.

I was thinking the same thing about senior year all-stater and saying you are a junior. Are you expecting to make state next year or did you already make it?

Well, here's some hope for you. I just got accepted to UT (I have to start in June) as top 20% with a 1340 SAT. I think if you raise your SATs to the 1300s or higher you'll be good. That and have some good extra cirriculars and volunteer hours.

As a junior, I missed All-State by one point. The two guys who beat me are graduating this year and unless an amazing freshman tries out next year, I'm positive I'll get one of the two spots. We play 3 songs for the tryout. I played the first two perfectly, and on the third piece I missed around 4-5 notes which cost me that one point :( My rankings were 2-3-2-3-3 and the 2nd chair guy (who made All-state) got 3-2-3-2-2

Actually I think you have a good chance at UT if you raise your score to 1300 as well. I got in top12% 1340 SAT. I would also look into Baylor, although I don't know anything about it someone w/ stats like yours at my school applied to it's music program.
