chances at some texas schools

You have similar stats to me and I got accepted into both. Actually your whole application looks similar to mine.

Pros:
-Minority
-First to attend College
-Hispanic who didn't use Spanish as a "Foreign" Language
-Rigorous Classes
-Decent SAT scores esp. for Hispanic
-Strong Interest in Music
-Texas Resident
-And if you have any other hooks; ie. Did you support your family with some of your income?

Cons:
-Not in Top 10%, which hurts A LOT of qualified students
-A little weak in Community Service, which has its own section on App
-No Leadership Positions outside of Band
-How is the strength of your school?
-1300 on SAT could do wonders for you. UT puts a lot of emphsis on numbers.(Rank,SAT)

Overall you have a good chance, but there is always some work you could do. And take others' advise about looking into other schools. If money is a problem request fee waivers. Don't limit yourself to UT and A&M.

hey thanks a lot for the advice everyone, I REALLY appreciate it. Question: Is it worth mentioning that freshman year I missed about two weeks of school because my grandpa was about to die in houston and I had to go with my parents? Those two weeks left me behind in my academics. I missed many lessons and my GPA dropped significantly (About a 3.7 to a 2.9 or so). Would the admissions committee even put that into consideration?

First off, I'm sorry about your loss.
There should be a section with a space for "extenuating circumstances" or "explanations" or something to that order. Def write it in there. They're human, they will understand.
