Chances at southern schools

I am a rising senior and have been worrying about applying to colleges in the north for a valid reason, My SAT and ACT scores are not sufficient. I've decided to concentrate on the southern region to boost my chances, but also apply to some semi-competitive northern schools. I'll most likely submit my ACT score, which is still low, over my SAT score...here's my list and some of my credentials.

list for me - South
1.University Of Florida - top choice, reach?
2.Florida State University - safety.
3.university of Miami - reach.
4.University of South Florida - safety

list - North
1.Case Western Reserve - reach?
2.University of Pittsburgh - Sister attends med school there.
3.University of Rochester - Sister attended
4.Boston University - reach?
5.George Washington University - attended a summer scholars program.

Thats my complete resume, with some obvious altercations it will be the one i submit with my applications.

As for my personal rating for EC. I would say I exceedingly outperform the students at my school. Basically, I standout and are somehow unique.

Additional Information
-Indian, Asian Background
-1st Generation
-Male (most florida schools have more women than men, i.e UF - 57>43)

My essay will most likely by solid, I'm pretty expressive writer.

Please comment on my chances, it would be highly appreciated. Let me know if there is anything I can improve on to get into those schools, specifically UF.

-thanks to everyone

bumppp

bummppp

Chances anyone? It'd be appreciated.

I'm guessing your in-state for Florida. That being said, I'd say U of Florida will be a match if u can get your ACT up.

I'm from Florida and if you are in-state, UF (99% of the time) takes the top 5% from any Florida public high school. If you are in the top 5% chances are you qualify for Bright Futures, too. That's why I love being from Florida: quality education at 4 grand a year equals happy students.

If you are in-state but not in the top 5% then I think that FSU is a safety and UF is still a match. They look mostly at essays and leadership. I think that UM is more numbers based (but still a holistic approach) and it would be a low reach.

If you are not in-state, I think that FSU is more of a match, but very likely, and UF is a low reach.

No matter what your residency, Case Western would be a low reach, Boston U would be a low reach, GW would be a high match, and the ones where your sisters attend would be high matches. If your ACT does go up a point or two, I think all of the schools you listed would be matches or high matches.

Try to add another safety school.

I'm in state, and among weighted GPA's I'm top 10%. My schools pretty competitive, but I've seen a trend among acceptance, almost 80% gets accepted each year since I've been a freshman.

FSU and USF are my safeties, and my current prospective tops are GW,UF,UPitt, and U of R.

Sorry for being extremely pushy, but I want to begin applying, writing drafts for my essays, and get some pretty reputable recs. I guess you all know how it goes.

Concerning UF, should I try and obtain 1 or 2 points higher on the ACT? Or is my current resume competitive among applicants.

A 26 is the average ACT at Florida State for last admissions cycle. You are more of a match than a safety there. USF may be a bit more of a safety as they have lower averages.

Note that FSU is cutting freshman enrollment and budget concerns may make this reduction more severe, thus making competition more intense. I suggest you apply early to FSU - this first date where they accept applications is August 15.

Note also that in doing some analysis of FSU's admissions figures (from what little info was published in the paper) for last cycle the admissions rate appears to have dropped to 46%.

Good luck!

although your Act is on the lower side your courses and Ap's are above, I would retake the ACT and what about the SAT? Make sure your essays are excellent.

I would also try to organize and make a clearer focus on your ec's. Will you be getting a rec from ARia job? Need to express what you really love.

I would still apply to a couple of those reach schools in the north if that is your dream, you just don't know, always cover your bases, but don't give up your dream so easily.

Best of Luck

Yea, like I before, my top choices are UF and Rochester. FSU and USF are my safeties and I would probably transfer out after a year or so.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I wouldn't mind more.
