Chances at Stanford (and pretty much everything else)?

Please chance me at Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, Duke, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Williams, University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, and Pomona

Background:
• State: Massachusetts
• School Type: pretty good private (5-10% to ivies)
• Ethnicity: White
• Gender: Male
• Hooks: Recruited at some schools for rowing. The issue is that I might not be able to quite cut it at the very top rowing schools like Harvard, Princeton and Stanford (Dartmouth, Brown, Penn, etc. are definitely possible) but those are my top choices. So I may try to get in on academic merit, with maybe moderate coach support.

Stats:
• GPA UW: 3.92
• Rank: unknown, but def top 2 or 3
• SAT: 2390 (800M, 800CR, 790W) One Sitting
• SAT II: Chemistry 800, Math II 800
• AP: Chemistry, Euro, Spanish Lang, English Language scores pending
• Senior Schedule: BC Calc, APUSH, AP Physics C, AP English Lit, Religion
• Major Awards: USNCO Honors (top 150 in country), National Spanish Exam Level 4 State Winner, Cum Laude Society, most likely NMSF and AP Scholar w/ Honor, School Awards

Extra-curriculars:
Sports:
Varsity Crew (Captain) – three year first boat member, competitive club rower during summer, medaled at regional regattas, etc. Talked about in hooks
Varsity Cross Country (Captain)
JV Basketball

Clubs/ Leadership:
Student Discipline Committee student representative – elected by vote of students and faculty
Day Student Prefect - coordinate events and such for day students at my boarding school
Philosophy Club (co-founder/president) – may try to emphasize this, as it is a successful club and a unique interest of mine
Literary Magazine Editor (Editor, but not editor-in-chief)
Politics Club (co-founder, president) – invite speakers to my school, have weekly meetings/debates about current events
Science and Writing Tutor – only junior in school named a writing tutor

Random:
Mountain Climbing with dad (climbed Mt. Rainier, Grand Teton, Mt. Kilimanjaro, etc.), may write my common app essay about this
Rock Climbing

My recs will be from my chem teacher/olympiad coach, and my Euro teacher/ cross country coach.

Thank you! I'll try to chance back.

you seem like you’d have no problem getting into any of those schools on the basis of academic merit+sheer rowing ability. You didn’t mention Yale though, you should also apply there! GOOD LUCK!!!

CHANCE BACK!

I hope the crew coaches advocate on your behalf because it seems that they might not since your resume is so impressive. You must know that coaches have limited pull during the admissions process. Good luck with rowing this summer, and hopefully you will be recruited to Stanford University. I also suggest you taking the SAT II for Spanish and Literature because it seems you will easily ace those. Other than that, glorify your senior year grades!

Considering your one of the top students in a school that sends atleast 5% to ivies each year, which may even be higher with an intelligent class, along with you continued and demonstated interest and success in both rowing and chemistry, you have a fine chance of gaining admittance to an IVY caliber school in the fall. If I were you, I would go with either Stanford EA or become one of the first rounds of Harvard EA (just installed this upcoming fall 2011) to gain admittance to such a prestigious university. Hence, you will be able to focus more on crew and less on schoolwork after your early admittance, if you wish.

thanks everyone, you guys seem really optimistic. Perhaps I misunderstood you, but isn’t there anything I should try to work on? Or any advice on application strategy (sticking with non HYPS schools, where I could have a guarantee, etc.)? Thanks

Make sure you really emphasize your rowing experience and skill. That will help you move (in a way) into the athlete pool, which will help your chances.

Please chance back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1160541-chance-rising-senior-senior-member.html

bumppppppppp

would you be willing to reveal which private day school? feeder school perhaps to particular ivies?

Well I think your SAT scores are amazing. Your Essay topic sounds really intriguing. You might want to consider writing about your experiences as a writing tutor, it also sounds like a really rewarding experience. Good Luck!

thanks for bumping me greentea haha… wierd.
And I don’t want to say what school I go to, but it’s pretty safe to say it’s not a feeder anywhere I’m looking at. we get a few people in everywhere
And being a writing tutor really isn’t very exciting, but thanks for the suggestion

Yeah, good ECs, good Academics…good shot.

Great shot! Nice SAT scores as well.

you’re a junior right?

Stanford, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale you’ll need to be recruited/LL/“supported” at Stanford to know you’re getting in, without real recruitment I’d say 25% chance with your stats/EC’s.

Duke, Brown, Dartmouth, Williams, University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, and Pomona should be easier. I’d add Cal and Washington if you are a top 100 rower in the US, although your stats will get you into Cal and Washington assuming you’re OK paying 5k a year to attend those schools.

Are you going to school to row? Or hoping rowing will get you in to school?

Hi pacheight, sorry my reply was so delayed, I’ve been busy.
Yes, I’m a junior.
I’m looking to both row at a high level and attend a top school, so the answer is both. Non-rowing schools are included in case rowing goes south (ie an injury) and I need fallback options. If I was to get accepted to HYPS without crew, I would try to walk on.
I guess my main question is: If I was to get likely offers from say, brown and dartmouth, would it be ridiculous to pass those up for a “supported” shot at one of HYPS?
