Gender: M
Race: Asian
- Yeah, I know that's gonna hurt right there. Asian males are probably over-represented if anything.

GPA: 3.95
- My school doesn't do weighted. But for the record, I've taken 3 AP classes last year as a sophomore, and I'm taking 2 this year since 2 of my classes didn't run (I'm taking the AP test without the AP class). Next year I should be in 2, along with Diff. Eq and Calc III at a local university.

ACT: Haven't taken it yet, will take it in April. Should get at least a 33-34.
PSAT: 97th percentile, should be enough for National Merit Commended.

Athletics:
- Two years of football, got a varsity letter this year.
- Three years of track

Clubs:
- Marching Band (3 years)
- Pep Band (3 years)
- Concert Band (3 years)
- Math Team (3 years)
- National Honor Society (1 year)

Work/Volunteer:
- Applying for a job as a busboy right now
- JDRF Juvenile Diabetes Walk, 2 years
- Oktoberfest, 2 years
- Hospital Volunteer this summer
- Football Summer Camp (for 1st-8th grade) last summer
- VP of a 3v3 Basketball Tournament
- Assorted NHS activities
- Math tutor at school

Other Information:
- I was a competitor at the 2007 Mathcounts National Competition (one of four from my state)
- 10 years of piano, assorted awards

your a good student and have good stats(considering you get 33-34 on act) but you dont really have any ec’s that stand out but if you write some good essays you could have a chance

Another top student with ordinary ECs. And the problem isn’t being Asian. It’s that too many top students do the ‘expected’ ECs and then blame their inability to differentiate themselves based on their being Asian (or white or unhooked or whatever.) It ought to be perfectly clear by now that good grades is the just one prerequisite, but not the only one.

I actually thought 10 years of award-winning piano performance sounded potentially interesting if it reflects a real love of music and you’ve done something creative with your talent like compose, teach, research music history/theory/science, etc… And the busboy job could give you some interesting insights if you are especially perceptive.

I assume you’re from a small state (which helps a bit). If you were from CA, I’d say your chances would be very low because it seems every high-GPA Asian student from CA applies to Stanford.

I’m from Wisconsin, and not from Milwaukee or Madison. According to the census, my town is 92% white, with most of the Asians being Hmong refugees. In fact, as a result I’m quite white-washed. Most Asians on the West Coast would probably call me a twinkie or a banana.

We’ll see how it goes. I’m going to be spending a majority of my summer doing various volunteer work, preferably at the hospital. I want to eventually go on to med school, and I enjoy helping and taking care of those who need my help.

^ agreed.
You being asian and playing football is unique (i haven’t really seen any asians participate in the american sport; the recommendations from that component could be good). Definitely have a great shot w/merit and sport. Strengths are that you have shown dedication (i.e. piano) (quality rules over quantity).
