lol @ mediocre class rigor. You don't even know what classes his school offers moron. And lol @ saying top 5 is a mediocre rank. Do us all a favor and not post in chances threads anymore ty =]

Great rank, great gpa, great test scores, generic ECs

I'd say you have about a good as chance as anyone mate. People with great rank/gpa/test scores apply to Stanford all the time and the way they differentiate between applicants is ECs, essays, recs, and hooks.

Hopefully you write some original essays and have some good recs to make up for your generic ECs.

"Top 5" means he's #5. And if he's #5 then he's not top 1%. Take into consideration the number of people going to his school. A person who's rank 7 out of 700 is a lot better than someone who's 1 out of 50.

What's so great about top 2% for a school like Stanford.

And whatever his school offers, taking 2-3 AP's a year is not a rigorous schedule. If that was all his school offers, OP would have probably mentioned it; and, looking at his honors classes, I highly doubt that he took the max. Inference...

His ECs are not bad at all. Eagle Scout is a lot better than anything you have, llpitch.

I've been on these forums for years and I've seen a lot of people applying to Stanford who are much better than the OP who've been rejected.

When you say "great", you're speaking about "great" relative to normal people. When I say "mediocre", I'm speaking about relative to Stanford applicants. We're both right, don't go name calling and acting like you're better than I am.

I'm trying to say that you never know about applications these days, it's a crapshoot and there's honestly not even a reason to chance people because it's just so random.

And 5 out of 300 at HIS school (they don't give a crap where anyone else but he goes, it's his application, and his high school) MOST LIKELY means that he took the hardest classes at HIS school. For all we know he could live in a ghetto and his school barely offers any advanced classes.

He obviously didn't take the hardest classes if his unweighted is 4.0 and he's ranked #5. At least 4 people from HIS school took harder classes to get higher weighted GPA. Are you logically impaired?

I hate arguing with idiots, so please just stop trying.

And my analogy was just that, AN ANALOGY. I'm not saying my high school matters in his application. Stop adding random, irrelevant, useless, matter-of-fact statements in your little arguments. In fact, just drop it all together. This is a "what is my chance" forum. If you think telling people what their shot is then stop trying to do so.

"I'm trying to say that you never know about applications these days, it's a crapshoot and there's honestly not even a reason to chance people because it's just so random."

This has to be the most ill-informed comment on CC (sadly, it's very common). No, admissions aren't random. They admit you for a reason. Simply because you don't understand the reason doesn't mean it's random. It could have been the essays. It could have been the interview. It could have been anything.

"And I've seen people with 2170's, horrible ECs, and great essays get in. It's a crapshoot."

Do point them out; I'd love to see.

"Do us all a favor and not post in chances threads anymore ty =]"

I'd advise that you not tell [more experienced] users not to post. (I recall you having given some bizarre chances yourself.)

To the OP:

I don't understand how you got a 4.1 W GPA, when your UW GPA is a 4.0 and you have so many weighted courses. Your SAT I scores are okay (a little below Stanford's average), but otherwise your scores are awesome. Your rank is fine (I wonder why it's only 'top 5' when you have that many weighted courses and you have a 4.0). Your weakness is your ECs. Though the orchestra recognition is good, you show little focus -- music to NHS to swimming... I'd say Stanford is a reach because of this, but I still think you have a shot. Make sure to make your essays great.

I was admitted to Stanford with a rank of 8/274 so I don't consider his rank "mediocre" with respect to Stanford applicants. Obviously, the specific level of coursework is hard to portray on a college admissions internet thread but should be pretty clear to a Stanford admissions officer. Academically, I think the OP is fine in that respect...solid test score and grades and appears to have taken challenging classes. The biggest parts of admission to Stanford are definitely teacher recs and essays so those will be the determining factors. You might also want to expound more on the ECs on the application.

Btw...college admissions are rarely random.

Since I got to school with this guy, let me clarify a few things:

He is ranked number 1 on an unweighted scale. Weighted, he's probably 2 or 3.

He has taken the hardest courses, but I think he put down the wrong weighted GPA.

Our school only offers 6 AP.

Next year, we are adding 3, actually, but yes, 6 for this year.

FLIPPY you should use some care when posting here, Adcom do look at postings and when they see yours and you should pray that they don't,you will be rejected .You should get some anger management help
