hispanic
4.0 gpa (weighted : /)
not so great grades...C's in math every semester but he's not planning to go into anything math/science oriented
academic decathlon captain
president of french club
president of deca
national merit hispanic scholar (something like that)

ap scores
english: 4
us history: 4
spanish: 5
psychology: 4
chemistry: 1
world history: 5

Sat score: 2340

Sat II's
literature: 760
math II: 780
ush: 800

Volunteer service at random places

scholastic art and writing gold key (sent to nationals but didn't win anything)
academic decathlon interview medal 2nd place
he's a good writer...should be fantastic essays

URM+2340+excellent SAT 2 scores= acceptance at all three if I had to guess.

One question though. Does the school rank? Because if your friend is not in the top 10% his chances are a bit lower. Though if your friend is in the top 10% my equation at the beginning of my post applies lol.

he’s afraid his grades are going to severely hurt his chances. they probably are but he was wondering how much his sat scores (and i guess in his case his urm status?) can help him.

I would say he has a very good chance because he is a URM, but I dont know how much the SAT scores makes up for the GPA and AP CHemistry score.
He should be alright.

He is a very bright person and has done well academically. Normally, I would say because he is kind of lacking in ECs, Stanford is a reach. However, since he is hispanic AA unfortunately secures him a position at Stanford.

Stanford-mid reach (just liek it is for everyone)
UCLA-high match
UC Berkely-low reach/high match

your grades are good (at least your weighted GPA). although you arent planning to go into math as a major, stanford will still look at your math grades and judge you based off of them. im curious about one thing: how did you get C’s in math all the semesters and you still have a 4.0? just curious. your AP scores are legit except chem (which i would NOT report). your SAT is stellar, don’t retake. SAT II’s are really solid. the only hole i really see is in your ECs… they’re aren’t minimal, but they aren’t crazy-outstanding. so not bad but not good. good luck!

Stanford- reach
UCLA- match
UC Berkeley- High match

Its hard to say with Stanford. His scores are top notch, his GPA is average. It’ll boil down to some mix of luck, essays, and recs. Either way, good chance.

Go for the college that fits you. Don’t go to a college for its name. That is the worst mistake that most people make. “I’m going to Harvard because it’s considered a college for smart people”. This is a bad idea…

Your friend has a great shot at UCLA and Berkley, but Stanford is a reach for everyone. It’s my dream school as well, so maybe we will see each other! SAT’s are great, EC’s are kind of bland but he could definitely improve those before college app time rolls around.

I think your friend has a very good shot at all of these schools…
UCLA-Match
Berkeley-High Match/Low Reach
Stanford-Reach (basically a reach for everyone)

what does a match/high match mean? well, what i mean to ask is what does that equate to in percentages? i.e. 50% etc.? i’ve heard different responses for this.

Hmm, he may be worried about his grades but honestly his extra curricular aren’t very good either. If its just random volunteering it doesn’t really show any deep academic interest. Obviously the minority status will help but I’m not sure if that will cut it. He’s going to have a tough time at the Stanford (Reach), but I think he’ll have a decent chance at Berkeley (high match).
