Chances at Stern

Okay I did one of these before, but I didn't get much of a response on the chance forums. I also have updated information.

I will be applying ED to Stern and am a white female attending public school.

There's probably more, but you get the idea...

Oh, and I have been added to the NYU list of recruits for the track and cross country teams, so I'm thinking that that might work to my advantage, but I don't know if it is enough to outweigh my poor SAT scores (even though I WILL be retaking them!).

So what do you think? Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Unless you get those SATs higher, Stern-GSP.

ditto...unless your hot

try and break 600 on that CR. or at least get your math up. you will be going up against kids with 750+ SAT maths.

other than that.. you have a solid record.

Thanks everyone, yeah I'm definately going to try to get my SAT much higher. I am thinking I will definately break 600 on CR because I have been studying for the AP English exam and I am going to be doing more SAT prep over the summer. I am also going to try to get my math to about 680-700 and writing up a little higher as well.

And jkim251, what do you mean unless your hot?

you're going to have to get ATLEAST 1400, preferably 1450

uh...drunk post, i don't even remember

So I guess SATs do play a HUGE role in admissions even though everything else is really good? Wouldn't they rather see a really high GPA and lower SAT scores? Or is it just that the people they accept have both really high?

jkim251- ok, lol

since it's at least 1400 does that mean its only on one test or superscored?

Applying ED, you should get in with lower SAT scores. If not, you should get into Stern-GSP at the least. From my understanding, GSP is for students with good HS records, but with less exceptional SATs.

edit: you do need to get your sats to at least a 1300 for Stern-GSP.

what is GSP?

VERY few people get into Stern GSP (about 5 people) and its usually people wanted for sports teams (why they care in division 3, who knows)

Whereas your other stats are good, they arent amazing. Most people in Stern are at the very top of their class with a bunch of state/national awards.

You are a girl though, which will probably help you.

I know someone who made Stern w/a 1300 SAT (M+CR), but that is a rarity. Most students in Stern have SAT score above 1400 (average was 1441 I believe), so you should at least try to approach that range. You might be able to get in w/a lower than a 1440 because you have a good academic record, are in the top 1% of your class, and are a female (Stern is over 60% male).

Thanks everyone! Yeah, I'm hopefully going to get those SATs a lot higher!

Also, would you recommend the GSP program or is it really not worth it? Is it looked down upon? Thanks.

You don't exactly apply to GSP. The admission officers offer you the choice of it if they feel that you would be a good fit. Personally I would say that if NYU is your first choice, and you are willing to work hard (as your Stern GPA starts your junior year when you transfer) I would take it. Otherwise, there are plenty of other great schools with about the same career prospects.

Mattie:

How does being a girl help? NYU's overall student body is 62% female 38% male. I do not have the breakdown by school but I doubt Stern has more males than females. Some colleges are now starting to give preference to men over women to try and keep a balance in the student population.

Although, I am a female in-coming freshman at Stern.

Keep up the good work Morgan and good luck on your SAT's.

Per NYU's common dataset for 2006-2007

Percent of firsttime, firstyear (freshman) students with scores in each range:
SAT Critical Reading SAT Math SAT Writing
700-800 30.2% 35.6% 31.2%
600-699 54.3% 49.1% 52.8%
500-599 14.9% 14.5% 14.9%
400-499 0.6% 0.8% 1.1%

First-time
Freshman Admissions Total First-time
Freshmen (Fall/Summer 2006)
Acceptance rate 36.2%
Yield rate 36.9%
Number of applications 35,448
Number of accepted 12,842
Number enrolled 4,740

common data base includes all schools, as above poster said Sterns average SAT score is 1441 (getting progressively higher each year also)

"but I doubt Stern has more males than females." lol

Thanks everyone!

hsseniorlooking, those stats were very helpful! Thanks, even though I know that Stern's averages are a bit higher.

So does being a girl count for me or against me? Also, I think that being a recruited athlete will definately help me.

Morgan, being a recruited athlete, (plus a female a bit) will help you-- in your specific situation. Only your SATs could be slightly problematic, but, if you are indeed a recruited athlete, strings could be pulled.. and the rest of your record is great. There isn't much else you can do besides apply, wait and see. Good luck!
