Berkeley - reach

At NC State, Computer Science is in the College of Engineering. I’m not sure that your weighted GPA and math grades would be high enough to get you in. Check out this link:

http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/undergrad/faqs.phpf

Like so many posters, you present too many details about less-important factors and not enough about the most important (including your individual M & CR scores, your unweighted GPA, your rank in class, and - if cost is an issue at all - your estimated EFC vs. your actual family budget).

I’m afraid your Math grades, which range from C+ to D, are a potential obstacle for admission to numbers-driven public flagships as a prospective CS major. Computer Science could be considered a branch of applied Math (in fact is still part of the Math department at some schools). UT Austin and UC Berkeley have two of the top 10 CS programs in America. I think these two are probably out-of-reach.

AT TCNJ, average SATs are 600 CR (550-650 median) and 627 M (580-680 median). 91% of enrolled students were in the top 25% of their HS classes. The overall admit rate is 46% (62% for ED).

AT NC State, average SATs are 579 CR (530-620 median) and 612 M (560-660 median). 83% of enrolled students were in the top 25% of their HS classes. 95% of enrolled students who submitted HS GPAs submitted HS GPAs of 3.75 or higher, according to the students’ own (presumably weighted) averages. ~90% of enrolled students who submitted HS GPAs had HS GPAs of 3.25 or higher, according to NC State’s conversions. The overall admit rate is 52% (67% for EA). Deadline 2 for EA applications is November 1 (with notification by 30 January).

Compare your own GPA and individual scores against these numbers to assess your chances. If you are a high-need, out-of-state RD applicant to any of these public schools, your actual chances might be lower than the above numbers suggest. If you are a prospective full-pay ED/EA applicant, they might be a little higher.

You might have a better shot at smaller private schools that are less numbers-driven (more “holistic”) in admissions … if you can afford their higher sticker prices, or if you qualify for need-based aid.

That is a really odd collection of schools.

MOWC, I’m guessing that the OP listed the most selective school in his home state (NJ) as well as out-of-state flagships known for computer science and engineering. I think the Cs and Ds in math are going to keep him out of those schools, and are a good reason to re-think a computer science major no matter where he gets in.

OP, do you have experience in computer science that you haven’t mentioned? Unless you’re already a programming whiz, I’d be very worried about whether that’s the right field for you. Courses like geometry and calculus use the same underlying skills as CS. Struggling in those classes is an indicator that college CS is going to be brutal.
