Chances at the following schools

Hi everybody, I was wondering about my chances at the following schools, and if you think my reach/match/safety groupings are somewhat accurate. Thanks.

Safeties: University of Pittsburgh
Penn State

Matches: Bucknell
Lehigh

Reaches: UPenn
U Virginia
UNC Chapel Hill
Duke

Stats

I am an 06 senior, I attend a public hs in PA.

GPA: 94.5 unweighted, 20th out of 275, (our school has a strange weight system which i dont feel like explaining) i am 15th out of 275 weighted, tough courses all years in hs.

Senior Classes:

AP Chemistry
AP US History
AP English
Latin 4 (Honors, i will probably take the AP latin test)
Economics
History of the Vietnam War

SATs: 760M/730V/700W (10 on essay)
SAT 2s: just took on saturday, positive that my math2c will be around 750, dont know what literature or us history will be...could be good, could be bad.

ECs: Varsity golf: jr and sr years, jv in fr and so yrs.
Varsity Baseball: jr and sr years, jv so yr
Student council: Executive committee all 4 years, attended 2 summer leadership workshops, which i will most likely write at least one of my essays on.

National Honor Society
Latin Honor Society/Jr Classical League: president of the club, magna cum laude on the national latin exam twice.
Class president jr and so years (figurehead position, i probably won't even include this on my apps)

Awards: 4 varsity letters, National latin exam (see above), student of the month in latin and social studies, Honor Roll thruout hs, Perfect attendance, degree of distinction in nfl (see above), other miscellaneous awards.

No real work experience, busy w/ golf/baseball/debate/student council throughout the year. Mowed lawns for a little extra money on a regular basis. Umpired little league baseball freshman year.

Anyway, what does everyone think? thanks in advance!

Sorry, forgot to add that I will get excellent recs and my writing skills are solid (the 10 on the SAT writing was not one of my better efforts, it was too vague, i couldnt think of any examples to support my ideas), so my essays should be good.

You have lots of schools in Pa on there...ever think about F&M, Dickinson or Elizabethtown? Not sure where exactly in PA you're from, or if you are planning to stay near home or want to go away from home.

UNC is a reach for sure, but hey, give it a try!

Pitt alum. '04
UNC-CH grad student

UVA: 45%
UNC: 40%
Duke: 40%
Upenn: 40%

For matches try Holy Cross-former PGA course for home matches and a school very strong in Latin/Classics. Might look at Colgate also.

you're chances at UVA are MUCH better than 45%, and you'll almost certainly get into UNC. I agree with 40% for duke, but i'd say 20% at penn. Best of luck

"almost certainly get into UNC"

Please do not listen to this poster, they are obviously unaware of the extreme competition that out-of-staters face. I am a UVA student from NC; UNC is only 18% out of state and there acceptance percentege AS A WHOLE is around 30%. So after factoring out all of the athletes you will get even less than 18% regular out-of-state students. So you take 18% of the 30% and there-you-go. Very qualified, but remember UNC will be very tough to get into because they HIGHLY favor instate applicants.

dude he has a GREAT with a 3.8 GPA, you don't know what you're talking about.

"you don't know what you're talking about"

Some one who doesn't "know what they're talking about", would respond to my post with this.

Support your claim that he has a 40% chance at UNC. Hate to break it to ya, but the admissions statistics and acceptance rates with someone as qualified as him just dont support that.

O.K. genius, UNC's oos acceptance rate is around 19%, Upenn's is 21%. There please quite posting your ignorance.

wow once again you just don't get it. You really think that UNC's applicant pool is as qualified as UPenn's? Just give it up buddy.... I almost guarantee he'll be admitted to UNC

DID I SAY THAT!

"but the admissions statistics and acceptance rates with someone as qualified as him just dont support that."

I was responding to your uninformed post, the STATISTICS as you were wanting, show that UNC has a lower ACCEPTANCE RATE. please quite responding.

haha well there are fewer qualified applicants applying to UNC than to Upenn, and for that reason UNC isn't as difficult to get into. It's really common sense. And BTW it's spelled "quit", without the e.

Hi! I am a NY mom (Long Island). Kids in our district apply to both UNC and UVA. Trust me- it is quite difficult for OOS kids to get into these schools. Same kids who get rejected from UVA get into the Ivies. My d applied ED to UVA was deferred and later rejected and she is now a soph at Cornell. Another kid was ED to UVA also rejected and also attending Cornell. The 3rd ED to UVA was rejected but did get into UNC. We seem to have better luck with UNC than UVA. Last year 2 kids were accepted to UNC. I think you definitely have a shot at getting into UVA or UNC but do not count on it. You seem pretty solid with your safety and matches and hopefully you'll get positive news on one or two of your reach schools. If you can, try to visit these schools- be in contact with the admissions office- show interest. If your golf game is good enough, you may want to contact the coaches but I can't really offer any advice on sports recruitment. Good luck.

Thank you all for your input and responses. I visited UVA, UNC and Duke the past 2 days, at the nc admissions info session, they said the middle 50 sat range is something in the 1300s (1350 maybe?) up to 1430. Unfortunately the next thing said was that they dont place alot of emphasis on SAT scores, and more on course load and extracurricular activities...not necessarily a bad thing though.

I do realize that it is incredibly tough oos, but hopefully i am qualified enough. BTW, my impressions of the schools: UVA: loved it, the campus is awesome, charlottesville is a cool town, just seems like a great place to be. UNC: campus was ok, not as nice as uva, but still very nice. chapel hill is great, and the food at the unc cafeteria was excellent. Duke: amazing campus, unfortunately the surrounding area (durham) seems pretty bland. I still liked it though.

"And BTW it's spelled "quit", without the e."

Ha, thanks for pointing that out, b/c i'm sure that wasn't just a typo.(sarcastic) :/
