Chances at TOP 25 Universities.

I'm not applying to ALL 25 universities, however I am applying to 10 of them.
The schools that I am applying to ARE:

UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UCLA
Northwestern
University of Chicago
Brown
Cornell
Tufts
MIT
Stanford (maybe).

My stats are as follows:

Freshman Year:
GPA - 3.83/3.71 (1 B 1st Semester and 2Bs Second Semester)

Sophomore Year
GPA - 4.0 (No honors or AP Classes)

Junior Year
GPA - 4.43/4.57 (5 AP Classes; 2 Bs in AP Calc and AP History 1st Sem; 1 B in Calc 2nd Sem)

Senior Year 4.57/4.57 (Expected)

My total weighted GPA then, will be around 4.2 .... Is this bad/okay/good for the schools I am applying to?

My SATs are as follows

SAT I - 1950 (CR 610, W 650, M 690)
SAT II: MATH 2C - 760; US History - 690
and expecting SAT II Physics - 700s

AP Exams:

US History 5
Calculus AB 5
Computer Science 3 (terrible teacher).
Planning on taking these exams

English lang & lit, Physics, B and both Cs, Government, Music Theory, Calc BC

I know that my B's hurt my chances a little. I also know that I have terrible SAT scores, and I plan to get them up, because they are from the beginning of Junior year (SAT I).

I also plan on taking the ACT, my expected score being 33 based on practice tests.

Extracurriculars:

Marching Band (4 Years and dedicated!)
Varsity Tennis (3 years).
Symphonic Band (4 years).
Martial Arts - 5 years! Recently got my Black Belt after an 11 hour test.
Volunteer at MATH LAB - at least 100 hours.
Managing Girls Tennis.
President and FOUNDER of "Tennis Club" at my school.
Worked at KUMON learning center for 2 years...will be counted as community service.
Also tutored several people (paid).
Did some gardening for a neighbor (paid).
Games Club - 4 years member, and last year Secretary
CSF (California Scholarship Federation) - 2 years.

That's all I can think of...but I always forget something, so yeah that is pretty much it.

Notes:

Ethnicity: Asian Indian (Immigrant)
Rank: 8...but out of 900 students! Is this good?
Planning to take ACT and SAT to boost test scores (they should be much higher).
I'm the ONLY AP Scholar before I apply at my school. And I have taken all the AP exams that my school offers, with the exception of like Spanish AP, because I'm in French.
Yeah, to emphasize the point again, my school sucks and we don't have counselers for a 3500 student school. sigh

Anything else I think of...I will add to the post!
Thank you so much for reading, and it would be very helpful if you are able to REPLY!!!

THANKS AGAIN.

~manu

I think you could get in the 25-20 range but not after that because then you start getting into duke, northwestern, ivies and they will not accept you because of your SAT scores.

You'll get into Davis, but the others are major reaches. No APs/honors before junior year, weak SATs, a bunch of Bs, over represented minority. You're not competitive at top schools. MIT with a B in calc? Manu, you need to start your list from scratch.

Umm, yeah, I really AM going to improve my SAT scores....and I will quit the top schools if the SATs don't go up...
let's hypothetically assume I get 2250 on SAT or 33 on ACT
then what?

And as for the MIT and getting a B in calculus...NO ONE in my class gets A's...also, both were B+ (not much credit, but still better)...and also, doesn't my 5 on the AP exam counteract that?
Oh, also, at my school, i am the only person that is a year "ahead" in calculus, so I was the only junior in the class.
I'm serious...my school SUCKS, and they literally do NOT allow APs before junior year! I plan to make this case in one of the parts of the personal statement.
is there any hope at all? lol

There's always hope. At an MIT info session, they said 650+ is a good cutoff for you being qualified to do the work. As for the no one getting A's, make sure you have a school report (or whatever it is called) sent with your transcript. It shows the number of people in your class that got a certain grade in each class, so MIT can see that no one else got an A.

I think you have a good chance if your essay is awesome. I think the biggest factor in getting into school is that you just have to show your passion for something (as long as its not like dungeons and dragons or something, lol).

thanks!!! Will do...
I have more hope now. lol

UC Davis Good shot

Everything below: No chance
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Northwestern
University of Chicago
Brown
Cornell
Tufts
MIT
Stanford (maybe).

Manu2007:

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach
UCD: Safe Match

If you get a 2250 on your SATs, and a 33 on your ACTs, and you keep up your class rank and GPA (both of which are quite good), things would probably fall out this way:

UCD - Safety
UC Berkeley - Match
UCLA - Match
Northwestern - High Match
University of Chicago - High Match/Low Reach
Brown - Reach
Cornell - Low Reach
Tufts - Match
MIT - Big Reach
Stanford - Big Reach

However, to gain 300 points on your SATs is very, very tough. Realistically then, you really have to start looking at good schools that are less selective. If math and physics are your thing, then you should check out the schools listed below:

Case Western Reserve
Georgia Institute of Technology
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
U of Maryland - College Park
Purdue - West Lafayette
Stevens Institute of Technology

Oh, and by the way, a good essay is helpful, but it doesn't negate mediocre SAT scores, especially at places like MIT, Brown, Stanford, etc. They have thousands and thousands of kids with 2250+ SATs and 3.9+ GPAs applying. If you apply with a 1950 SAT score, most likely the adcoms won't even bother reading what you've written.

UC Davis - safety
UC Berkeley, UCLA -slight reach or match
Northwestern - reach
University of Chicago - biggish reach
Brown - bigger reach
Cornell - reach
Tufts - safety
MIT - big big reach
Stanford (maybe). - big reach

Btw, how much do you earn at kumon? I plan on working there if I can't find a better job. It can't be worse than $10 an hour can it?

Thank you amptron2x! Your reply was quite helpful...
as were all of yours..
I'm going to have to work quite hard to negate my bad SAT scores, but I'll do my best.
Thanks people
Any other opinions?

PS: I earned like $10 per hour IN CASH.
Haha, no taxes and stuff...and then the person counted it as "community service." hahaha GENIUS

that's not a word that describes ME tho...
so yeah.

Hey, btw, I was wondering, what is an OUTSTANDING score for the ACT? is it like 33?
Thanks

econner- wow there really is such a thing as a school report to send? I didn't know that existed. So it would explain a grade deflation?

Hahaha, I actually disagree with a lot of people...I think I'm like the same level you are. I have decent test scores/grades. 3.82ish GPA and I got a 31 on the ACT, which isn't very high, but a lot of people tell me I have a chance at anywhere. I heard that you should always try, even if it's a reach. I'm applying to Northwestern, Brown, Rice, Uchicago, which are all reaches.
