Chances at top boarding schools?

So... I saw another person post chances for prep schools and he got a good response so I thought I'd try.

I'm a white, 13-year-old male applying next year for 9th grade. I will also be applying for some financial aid. I'm interested in SPS, Deerfield, Exeter, and Andover.

andover and exeter are awesome schools, not sure about the other two though...

your grades are good (but a lot of people who apply usually all have straight A's anyways so...), ECs are pretty good as well, but you DO have to be amazing to get into andover (not sure about exeter, but probably just as difficult)

all my friends that applied and got in had at least two things they were SUPER passionate about with awards, leadership and whatnot (for example, one friend got in who had been doing ballet for 8+ years as well as being an excellent writer, another could play almost every single instrument known to man and was AMAZING at math (he got into one of the hardest math classes @ PA for a SENIOR once he took the placement test at phillips, lol)

do you have ssat scores? those are super important as well. most of my friends that got into andover/exeter got at least a 97%tile+ (mostly 99%tile)...

BTW, it is MUCH harder to get into andover with financial aid... (personal experience, ugh lol)

good luck, hehe :)

My family could probably afford $20,000 ish a year at a boarding school. So that means I only need about $15,000. Is that a lot compared to other students? Are there any other options besides financial aid? lol.

I haven't taken the SSAT yet. I'll probably take it in the fall.

bump........

I'm a (soon to be) graduate of a mediocore public school but I have some advice. I'm sure all the parents here will agree.

Have the money talk with your parents now

Make sure they can afford to pay 50k+ for four years of college. If they can't afford to send you to a top college the money they spend on boarding school is wasted. You posted your family income on high school life board. I doubt you will get any financial aid for college. I don't know about boarding school financial aid but I doubt it is much more generous then HYP.

cant really tell without knowing your ssats and how good you are at your ECs. if ur a good swimmer, try to get a rec from your coach. same wit soccer

I wouldn't push perfect attendance. As stated, can't tell without SSAT scores, 95% should make you solid at all 4 schools. The swim coach wnting you will help.

it says in another thread that he was suspended in 6th grade. huh, so i guess im not alone.

lol it was an in-school suspension that MY MOTHER told the principal to give me. ughhh... I still remember that day. I'm not even sure if it's on my record since she's the one who wanted it.

Billhpike, my dad would be making about $100,000 CAD at his new job, which he still isn't sure if he's going to take it. He said with taxes he wouldn't be making that much. Do schools consider that there are much higher taxes in Canada? At his current job he's only making about $70,000 CAD. If he stays and his curent job, would they give us financial aid? My mom makes around $60,000 - $65,000 per year. Together, they make about $130,000 WITHOUT taxes. Do they expect to dish out $35,000 of that income just for boarding school?

By the way, there's still some issues with college money, which I have to consider before applying to boarding school. My grandma said she'd pay for it if it were in Canada, or she would only pay one year of U.S. college, which is like... 4 x more expensive, but also could be 10 x better. (depending on what school I go to). So yeah.. the college money thing isn't exactly settled.

Also, will that ISS effect their decision? I could probably get it taken off my record if I ask my mom.

While there are a few need blind boarding schools, most are not. They use scholarship money mostly to attract minorities and athletes. They can get all the top scoring whites and Asians they want paying full freight. So if you need money, and are in one of those categories as most boarding school applicants are, you need to position yourself extremely well. You need to have something exceptional they want.

I got into John Hopkins with an Out Of School suspension for making a poster that refered to my physics teacher as a whore.

lol billhpike.

But do you think that a minor ISS would affect their decision?

suze, hopefully my dad will be able to pay for most of the tuition. Do you think I could get in if I don't apply for financial aid?

Depends on SSAT, interview, recs, what your competition pool is. You've chosen the 4 schools hardest to get into. You may want to add a safety. When I applied I only apploed to the top because I had a good option at home. If you don't than look at some schools like St. Andrews, Hill and other good schools with higher admissions rates. Especially for you're Asian.

lol I'm not Asian. Well I figure that if I leave home I want it to be one of the best schools in the country or nothing. If I don't get into either of the schools I apply to, then I'll either move with my dad or go to a decent school in Ann Arbor (about 30 - 40 minutes away).

bump......

Definitly do not put down anything from elementary school! That makes the application sound way too "desperate to impress".

Financial aid is a big factor in whether or not you get in or not. They said that when I applied. It's on all the forms and stuff.

Essays are REALLY important. (Even more so than the interview) Essays are generally the only thing that differentiates one candidate from another---so it's important you stand out, essay wise.

Ann Arbor sucks, but Green Hills is a very good private prep school in Ann Arbor. You should look into it.

http://www.greenhillsschool.org/

Yup. Greenhills was the one I was talking about. If I don't get into my top choices, then I'll probably go to Greenhills or move with my dad and go to Upper Canada College in Toronto, but it's an all boys school. ihhhh.

So should I apply to all those schools without financial aid, and just try to find some scholarships that aren't affiliated with the school? Are there even any boarding school scholarships out there?

Is here an option where I could apply for financial aid, but if I don't get it it would be okay? lol. Would that increase my chances?
