Chances at top boarding schools?

here's some info on FA at greenhills http://www.greenhillsschool.org/admission/tuition.php
Greenhills is fairly cheap (as far as prep schools go) at around 15k

Yeah, but I much rather go to Andover, you know? I could go to a better school in Canada, but for $25,000 as a day student. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Have you considered that the surging Canadia Dollar increases your Dad's ability to pay for boarding school. If it goes up a lot more your dad could be able to afford an expensive american boarding school.

That's good news I guess. Although the American dollar is still higher than the US dollar. Do you think it will surpass it within the next few years?

"According to Mrs. Murphy, the number of such students is usually around twenty."

Only twenty students aren't admitted because of their financial status. Should I take the chance?

bumpppp.......

Well the thing is that if your parents can afford the school, and tell the truth on the fin aid documents, you won't get aid anyway. Much of the aid is reserved for kids from programs like Prep for Prep, athletes and prodigies. The well rounded white and Asian kids tend to be the full payers. The ones on scholarship seem to be extraordinary, 99 SSATs, varsity players freshman year, debate champions.......Just be realistic, all the top kids apply to AESD, if you add in a few other great but not so popular schools you'll have a better chance at money.

If I don't apply for financial aid, do you think I'd have a pretty decent chance?

I don't know if I should apply for financial aid or not. I mean, if my grandmother, mom, and dad split it up, then they could probably pay for it. My dad offered to send me to UCC ($25k a year) So he could probably spend about $20k on boarding school. So..yeah. lol.

bump......

bump......

Several of the top schools are closing in on need blind admissions. AES all say that they are very close right now. That means that applying for financial aid is at worst a minor disadvantage. Depending on the school, and the competition that year, they may not take aid into consideration at all. So if you need the money, apply. If you apply and they think you do not qualify, then you will be treated as full pay for application purposes. Exeter is raising money right now to become fully need blind. They will not reach their financial goal by next year, but they might have a need blind year if effect, even if not in policy.

Awesome.

So if I apply to Andover, Exeter, etc. for financial aid, and I don't qualify for aid, then I'll be considered as an applicant that isn't applying for financial aid?

Sorry if that sounded confusing.

I believe that is correct. More importantly, since need for aid enters into the admissions decisions only for the last few students they accept, if at all, it will not make much difference in your chances.

Just be sure to apply to a range of schools. Admission to A, E, and the other top places is extremely competitive.

Yes, I know. But I figure if I leave my family, it better be for the best education I get. If I don't get in, I'll go to a decent private day school.

bump.......

Do you think if I said I plan to pursue swimming at Andover, (which I do) that I'll have a better chance of being accepted? I'm not the next Phelps, but I'm pretty good.

Are you really good at swimming?
Or just good?

I got second in the state...

Is that considered really good?

Well... I got second for my school swim team, and I'd probably want to get a recommendation from the coach on my travel team.

Jonathan K-
its kinda obnoxious to bump this so much. your not the only poster that matters on this form. there r tons of others that want advice, so the excessive bumping is kinda obnoxious. you've already got a ton of advice, so now your just being inconsiderate.

Go away.

Didn't you bump your thread? Yes, you did. I bump my threads when they aren't on the first page. If I don't have a question, I don't bump the thread. Got it? Good.
