Chances at top schools and applying EA

My friend suggested to me that I apply to many schools EA open(This friend is going to Harvard next year). What do you guys think about this idea? He said that it doesn't bind me to any one school but at the same time increases my chances of getting into those schools. Also, I can apply to some schools that are considerable reaches but at the same time apply to some schools within my range. This gives me a shot of getting into almost the best school possible for me but also gives me a safety net. If I decide to apply EA open to a few schools, I am considering:
MIT
Caltech
Georgetown
UChicago
Rice
UNC Chapel Hill
There might be some others that I haven't considered yet also.
After the EA round I want to apply regular decision to:
Carnegie Mellon
Johns Hopkins
NorthWestern
UVA (in state)
Columbia
Princeton
Cornell
UNC Berkeley
WashU
Williams
Duke
and others

I'm a jewish male, junior, live in in VA, but go to a boarding school in NY(grades 9-12).

Stats:
GPA UW: 3.5 (my school doesn't rank)
SAT: 2090 (630 CR, 790 M, 670 W)- going to take again in June
SAT IIs: 800 Math II, going to take Chemistry and Physics in the fall.

APs:
10th grade- AP Calculus BC (5), AP Physics B (3)
11th grade- AP Statistics(anticipate a 5)
12th grade- going to take AP Chemistry and AP Latin, possibly AP Euro

This year during the fall semester I took multivariable calculus at Columbia in NYC with other college students and got an A. Last summer I took Linear Algebra at William & Mary and also received an A. This summer I am doing a research program with a math professor at William & Mary and next year I am going to take another class at Columbia and also do an independent study with the AP Statistics teacher.

Extras:
Varsity Tennis (9-12) Captain in 10th, 11th, and 12th
JV Basketball (9)
Varsity Fencing (10-12)
Ultimate Frisbee (9-12) Captain next year
member of school key club (10-12)
latin club(9-12) secretary in 10th grade
math club(9-12) Captain in 11th, 12th
Science Honors Program (SHP) at Columbia next year

National Latin Exam awards (9-11)
National Merit Scholarship qualified (11)
AMC 12: 118.5
AIME: 7 (all-time school highest)

This is my first time doing this so if anyone has a suggestion as to what else I need to include here, please let me know. Thanks for the feedback.

need800math:

UCB/UCLA: Reach (out of state)

uh, your probly not guarenteed at any of those schools, they are ALL reached, with a 3.5 UW, most average a 3.8 or a 4.0 UW, and better than 2080 SAT's, youll need 2200+ with that GPA

wait, so you think that ALL of those schools are reaches??

no, they aren't ALL. just take the SAT I again and do well.

Your math scores are awesome, and it's obvious that you are good at/enjoy math (all your APs and other classes), but don't neglect the reading/writing stuff. If you can improve those scores then I think you should improve your chances.

Raise the cr to e a serious contender at most of your schools. Even though your school desn't rank, colleges know where you stand if you go to a prep that sends lots of kids to ivies.

thanks for the advice, guys, but what do you think about my friend's suggestion of applying to several schools EA open opposed to applying to one school ED.

and how are my extras? I think my sports and leadership positions are pretty decent

I want to know what you guys think about Columbia. I know it's Ivy, but I aced multivariable calculus there this year, I am doing the Science Honors Program along with Calc IV there next year, and my grandfather and his father went to Columbia. What do you guys think?

all besided NC and williams and maybe carnegie mellon are reaches, Columbia is for sure, to anyone

I thought Williams was tougher than most of those, no?

not tougher than Columbia, Princeton, MIT...

MIT- major reach
Caltech- major reach
Georgetown- reach
UChicago- reach
Rice- semi reach/reach
UNC Chapel Hill- match?
Carnegie Mellon- match/semi-reach
Johns Hopkins- reach
NorthWestern- reach
UVA (in state)- semi-match?
Columbia- reach
Princeton- major reach
Cornell- reach
UC Berkeley- reach out of state
WashU- semi reach/match
Williams- reach
Duke- reach

Just my thoughts..

columbia is just as hard, if not harder to get into than Princeton...

If he's doing Columbia SHP, that might help...that's why I said just "reach." Statistically, Columbia is close to Princeton in terms of acceptance rate...

what about the fact that I will be applying EA to some of these schools (Georgetown, Rice, UChicago). doesn't that help my chances at all?

EA by itself does not boost your chances. ED does to a certain extent. Mostly, the reason why EA acceptance rates are higher than RD is because the group of applicants are self-selective.

how much do the high AMC and AIME scores help?
Also, don't you guys think that I can get into UVA RD easily since I'm in-state. (by the way, my stepmom is a professor there).

bump bump^^
