Extra-curriculars:
Band - I take an extremely active role in our school's band program. During my term of involvement, we have expanded from a 30 member concert band to an over 60-member marching band. During my term as section leader of mallet percussion, we expanded the section from 2 people to over 7. This year we are going to take part in our first ever competition. Additionally, my friend and I started our school's first ever jazz quartet, which now plays at almost every school event. I have been in the band for our school drama productions every year since sophomore year. Finally, last year I was made musical director. I play piano, mallet percussion, and flute. I've been taking piano lessons for the past 12 years. I've completed CM Level 6 and have been invited twice to the Branch Honors Recital (but unable to attend both times due to unforeseen circumstances). Average 10 hours a week year-round (but easily goes up to 40 if something big is coming up).

Campus Ministry - This organization is in charge of all the liturgical ceremonies at our school (it's a Catholic School). We run service drives like food drives, blood drives, etc. I have taken an active role since sophomore year.

Debate Team - I have taken part freshman year and senior year( I skipped the two intermediate years due to lack of time). I was elected treasurer.

Math Club - I started this club at my school this year so that we may become more involved in local math competitions. We had previously taken part in a single regional math competition where I've placed first and second, but there are so many more in our area. As founder, I'm the de facto president.

NHS - National Honor Society. We host school events among other things. I've been active since Junior Year. I'm running for president this year.

Volunteering - I volunteer bimonthly at a local developmental center which caters to people with developmental disabilities. I think I've done over 100 hours by now.

Journalism - I write an editorial for every issue of the school newspaper.

WASC accreditation committee - During my sophomore and junior year, I was asked to be on the WASC accreditation committee for our school. We had to put together a report on the school's ability to provide opportunities to students.

Now my two biggest ECs,

Meerkat/open-source software development - I've been into computers since the second grade and I've been an active member of the open-source community. I've contributed to open-source projects such as openoffice.org and mozilla firefox. About 3 years ago, I started meerkat (Meerkat - Home), an open-source project relating to distributed computing. I made it public at the beginning of this year. I am now managing over two developers and coordinating development. This project alone takes up about 30 hours a week (of course since it's the one whose schedule I have the most direct control over, this number varies from week to week, but it generally takes up a good amount of my time). On weekdays I usually work on it from about 4:00 - 8:00. On weekends, I might go the whole day just working on it.

Eon Energy - This is a business my brother and I are starting. It is meant to sell green energy products online. We are currently in the process of sourcing products. Eon Energy - Home

Summer programs

I have been invited to many summer programs but chose not to go due to financial constraints (The money can be put to better use on something else, in my opinion).

Bumpity bump bump bump…

Quick update I was elected president of the NHS chapter at my school…

And I’ll chanceback anyone.

ummm. You are more successful than half the people at the schools you want to go to. You will probably get into them. You got AP scholar and NMC. That is impressive. With that being said up above, unless you have a terrible SAT score, you will get in.

What did you do to win the harvard book prize?

The Harvard book prize is given for outstanding academics and extracurricular involvement.

wow you have quite a few good things going for you!
MIT-mid to high reach
Stanford- mid reach
Harvey-Mudd - probably match!
Harvard? - high reach… as with anyone =/
could you chance back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/814679-chance-me-please-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Completely disagree. AP Scholar and NMC are fairly easy accomplishments (AP Scholar more so than NMC, but NMC easy nonetheless). I’m not trying to rain on this parade, but the only AP award that’s impressive is AP National Scholar, as it requires the student to have taken a total of eight APs and scored 4s and 5s on all by the end of junior year. NMC is also fairly typical; if the mean SAT is around 2200 for top schools like Stanford and MIT, nearly all would have been NMC, and many NMS/NMF.

@BrookeWaggoner: Just so you know, I agree with you. I wasn’t sure if feinyNY was just trying to get a chanceback or something else.

Your ECs are spectacular

You seem to be a good match with Stanford given that you are heavily involved in that business of yours. Also, National AP Scholar, NMSF, Harvard Book don’t mean 5hit. But who knows, MIT and Stanford are pretty much impossible to predict nowadays.

SAT II Scores in:

Math II - 800
Biology M - 770

SAT I - 2250.

you have great chances at all. and probs in at harvey mudd.

chance me back please!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/819199-chance-me-funsies-do-you-know-you-want-d.html</a></p>

Quick note to future posters: Please, don’t just say great chances or bad chances just to get a chanceback, I would prefer well-thought out answers (At least, a list of colleges and chances).

the business start-up you did is amazing. and yet, with that taking up so much of your time, you still have such great ECs. stats good too.

MIT - mid-reach
Stanford - low- to mid- reach
Harvey-Mudd - match
Harvard - I think mid-reach

You definitely have the credentials to get in; it’s just that with Ivies it’s commonly a toss-up. Out of those four, I’d say count on getting into at LEAST one.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/818137-chance-me-emory-columbia-yale-etc-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

btw, I noticed on your site that you said you require people to help. just out of curiosity, what skills would a “helper” need?

What we really need now, right now, is someone skilled in C and computer programming. Although, we could do with a web designer/marketer.

Your SAT score and awards are mediocre. However, it seems to me that you are very tops at your school. Your school doesn’t sound amazing, but you are very active in creating your own EC activities (math team, your business, and open source programming). It’s rather a hard call to make, as you aren’t a very “standard” applicant. Overall, I’d say MIT won’t find you very attractive, but Harvard will like your spirit and attitude. I don’t know that much about stanford.

Wow…your ECs and scores are fantastic!
MIT-high reach
Stanford-reach
Harvey Mudd-Match
Harvard-high reach

I’m not sure why I didn’t note this in my original post, but I have also have won 1st and 2nd place at a regional math competition(one of my motivations in starting a math club at my school, so that we could participate in even more).

You are an Ivy League’s dream boy.
