Summer Programs:
1) National Student Leadership Conference - Law & Advocacy

During this week, I learned how the field of law worked and participated in a mock trial in the court rooms of Washington D.C. Through this program, I learned how to advocate for justice and what it means to both defend those innocent and persecute those who are guilty.

2) National Global Korean Youth Network

Sponsored by the South Korean government, I was among 300 Korean scholars internationally who was invited to South Korea for a week to study and create a global youth network. During this time, we took historic visits to many places in South Korea, learning about the cultures and history, and also listening to keynote speakers from government officials and celebrities most often concerning equality, justice, overcoming racial prejudice, and success for Korean youth.

3) Point of Light Youth Leadership Institute

Sponsored by the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, during this week long program, I learned the skills that make an effective later that I would later apply to the many clubs in which I currently hold a leadership role for. I was also taught how to create and organize my own community service project and was encouraged to become a more active member of the community.

4) Youth Theological Institute

During this 3 week program, emphasis was placed on discussion, debate, questioning and reason so that each scholar may develop his or her own answer to the complex theological questions that surround today’s religious debates. Visits were taken to various houses of worships, and religious figures, professors, and practitioners, to gain a more professional insight into each religion and its core beliefs.

Internships:
1) Englewood Hospital & Medical Center

Each Wednesday, I participate in anywhere between 2 to 4 conferences about medical procedures and patients. Afterwards, the rest of my day begins and ends with shadowing a doctor in a different field each week to learn the procedures and skills of each department. I have observed surgeries, examined CT scans and X-rays, and other medical procedures firsthand.

2) Buckingham Care and Rehabilitation Center

Assist Dr. Dongsoo Kim (NY/NJ Licensed Bilingual Psychologist; Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Psychology) at Buckingham Care and Rehabilitation Center helping him perform psychological tests and assistance to the elderly with mental disorders and other forms of mental illnesses through counseling and prescriptions of medicines.

3) NY&NJ Asian American Law Enforcement Advisory Committee

In the beginning my duties were to organize and file documents, supervising the receipt and sending out mail, and translating Korean to English for Americans. As the internship progressed, I did research into United Nations programs and the issues and agenda of various law enforcement agencies. I participated in visits to the NJ State Police Headquarters and the Regional Operations Intelligence Center as well as the NY State Police/Hudson Valley Transportation Management Center and saw firsthand how the NYSP supervise and control regional traffic. I used my research expertise and writing skills to incorporate the program’s lessons onto reports on projects concerning drug prevention programs which were submitted to a special committee on drug prevention at the United Nations.

Special Circumstances:

During my junior year my family went through a time of unimaginable financial hardship. Our utilities and phones were cut off, we lost our cars, and most importantly, my parents lost their livelihoods. Unable to recover from the damage, we were forced to use what little money we had to support ourselves without losing everything. Due to the erratic family situation, my mind was constantly focused on whether we would be able to make it through the day without any new debt or losing more money. As such, my mind was off track, and my studies suffered. Since then, they have tried their best, and although our situation has yet to get any better, I have learned to continue to smile and to support my parents in the best way I can.

My List:

1) Yale
2) Stanford
3) Columbia
4) Duke
5) Northwestern
6) U of Chicago
7) UC Berkeley (OOS)
8) UCLA (OOS)
9) U of Michigan (OOS)
10) U of Illinois (OOS)
11) U of Minnesota (OOS)

What are you writing in your essays?

Unfortunately, both Y and S are highly unlikely with your stats. There are many, many stories of financial hardship in the world right now, so don’t count on that helping.

How will your family pay for schools like the UCs and Michigan which have little aid for OOS students?

you have really good stats! maybe you should try the act though because the critical reading is much easier. a really solid standardized test score could make up for the relatively low gpa. even with your stats right now though, i think you’re in #5-11, although 1-4 are probably still reaches. good luck!

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/785983-s-t-n-f-o-r-d-rea-i-promise-chance-you-back.html</a> thanks :)

@ hmom5: I realize a lot of my schools are reaches. I’m not expecting to get in to my first 4. I really hope I get into northwestern, because as you said aid for OOS isn’t that great.

@314159: haha thanks for the input

bump?

Hmm…You have a lot of excellent subjectives, and your grades in your specialty (Science and Math) are very high. That said,
Yale-Reach (for anyone)
Stanford-Reach (for anyone)
Colombia-low reach
Duke-High match
NW-match
U.Chicago-Match
Don’t know about the rest.

It might look better if you did something about the Chem SAT II

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/786164-chances.html</a></p>

Actually, if you need aid the UCs shouldn’t be on your list (expect zero apart from any Federal you qualify for) and nor should Michigan. Don’t know about the other publics.

You should add some less competitive schools that meet need if you have a low EFC.

@hmom5: yea there definitely is truth in what you’re saying. do you suggest any schools? i’m applying to the ones on my list because of their great psych programs, but i don’t really know anything about aid.

@EnAll: Thanks!

I disagree. I think you have a very compelling story, and your SAT score is well in the range of Yale/Stanford/etc etc. Your GPA is definitely on the low side, true, but that can be explained by extenuating circumstances. Your ECs are FANTASTIC - you’re obviously very involved, very focused, very passionate.

If you write good essays, and the recs are as good as you think they are, then I think you’ll get into at least ONE of your top 4. Good luck!

bummmp bummp

yeah you def look life an ivy leaguer

1)Yale-high reach
2) Stanford-high reach
3) Columbia-reach
4) Duke-high match
5) Northwestern-match
6) U of Chicago-match
7) UC Berkeley (OOS)-low match/in
8) UCLA (OOS)-low match/in
9) U of Michigan (OOS)-in
10) U of Illinois (OOS)-in
11) U of Minnesota (OOS)-in

you definitely have great chances at all of these schools with the exceptions of yale and stanford, which are hit-or-miss schools and high reaches for any student of even the highest caliber. you still are a solid candidate for those schools, though. your resume is impressive, and you seem to have done very well in the math and science fields which is great since you plan on pursuing a science-related major. your ec’s are a little all over the place though and it’s hard to find focus, but that could just be the order in which you typed them. good luck!
chance me please! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/807089-chance-me-please.html</a></p>

you have a good chance…but ur GPA is kinda low
