ECs:
Track and Field: 9th-12th; I do triple jump and I throw shot put and discus. Unfortunately, I think this is the year I'll shine at state Last year I placed at district in each of my events but I didn't qualify to state. I now train year round for my events.

Capoeira: 9th-12th; a Brazilian martial art that combines dance, gymnastics and traditional fighting techniques. I wrote my essay about the night I landed my first backflip at capoeira. It draws an interesting parallel between the condition of the slaves who developed capoeira and the metaphorical shackles we bind ourselves with by lacking confidence.

Volunteer at Animal Humane Association: 11th-12th; around 100 hours so far

Internship at Sandia National Laboratories (2 summers) - worked in a group that worked on communications technologies

Community Builders Program: 11th; a class about nonprofit organizations with site visits. At the end of the program we allocated $10,000 to various organizations after reading their project proposals

Model UN: Just this year- it's fun but I have no distinctions.

Math II: 800
Physics: 730

ACT: 33

Thank you!

I understand that most of these are fairly random, but what would you say about Wake Forest or Vanderbilt? How much will a legacy help me at Duke?

Harvard, Yale, Stanford--reaches (high level of unpredictability)
UPenn--high match/low reach
WUSTL--high match--because of "Tufts syndrome" they waitlist many "overqualified" applicants
Johns Hopkins--match
Pomona--high match/low reach
Vanderbilt--in/low match
Wake Forest--match--again, "Tufts syndrome"
Duke--in/low match--they love legacies

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the response blqgirl!

I am a bit worried about this "Tufts Syndrome"- hopefully emailing the track coach at WUSTL may demonstrate enough interest to get me past that barrier.

Oh, and I forgot to mention in the first post that I am being recruited (not intensely) for track at Pomona.

Any other opinions?

You are qualified for every school on your list, which is outstanding. Most New Mexico prep schools do not do well regarding college placement due to poor advice, I guess. Although several of the private schools, like Sandia Prep and Albuquerque Academy, are having their top students apply to the University of Pittsburgh Honors College and they are getting substantial scholarship money. All of your schools are great choices. Wake Forest may surprise you with the high quality of students and demanding workload. Good luck!
