Hello everybody. Please chance my son for some top schools.
He attends a prestigious private boarding school in Mass. There he has a GPA of about 3.45, and an upward trend. The school sends many graduates to top 10 schools + ivys (about 40 percent). It has no class rank and offers very few APs outside of Latin and Greek.
SATS:
1480/2200 - 750 (cr), 730(m), 720(w).
Sat IIs:
680 Math I(he will probably retake)
730 US History.

AP
5 - US History
5 - English Language.

Extras: (I don't want to write to many of them down, but here they are)
- Editor of the yearbook.
- Summer internship at local newspaper.
- 2 Sport Varsity Athlete
- Head of a few clubs + lots of community service.
- Understands Chinese - I don't know if this should be on it.

Additionally, he has half Asian and half white, and we live in New Jersey, but he goes to school in Mass.
He is interested in Writing.

So here is the list:

Carleton
Davidson
Haverford
Bates
William and Mary (OOS)
Swathmore (just for kicks)
Grinnell
Pomona
Wake Forrest
Claremont Mckenna
Tufts
Boston College
Hamilton

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I will chance back.

Okay, seriously…try the ACT. Your son wont get into ANY of those schools without better test scores…1480 on the Sat is horrible…Have him try the ACT. It can make a huge difference. Also, his GPA is really low.

I would say every school is a reach. But why don’t you consider UMASS (if it counts as in-state)? He could get in there and it is a good school.

I honostly have not heard of a lot of those colleges however your son has a high SAT score with some other solid atributes, I would say Boston College is a reach school.

sorry i have no idea about most of your son’s schools. but he’s got great SAT scores might have a chance for really good schools like ivies, why not give it a shot? i mean, you never know unless you try ~;)

Boston College is not a reach for your son. An overwhelming majority of the students at my school get in with a 3.6 WEIGHTED GPA (maybe just my school).

Tufts will be a reach if not a high match. Pomona and Swarthmore will be very difficult to get into, but why not try.

It seems like your son’s school is a prestigious boarding school (Andover? Exeter?), so maybe some of the comments here are a bit too pessimistic. But I think he’s fine.

Impressive SAT and subject test grades. I mean, I don’t even think it’s a question. He’s definitley into every single place, except for Clarmont and Tufts. Those may be waitlisted but still worth applying to). He has a super chance at getting into Tufts, but I question Claremont and Swarthmore b/c their pretty hard.
That aside, his stats are so impressive, I definitley think he should stick in some better schools…maybe even a a couple Ivy’s. He shouldn’t sell himself short… he could definitely go somewhere like Dartmouth or Cornell…maybe even UPenn.

Oh my gosh someone thought it was 1480 instead of 2200?? that’s funny :d
I’m guessing that’s unweighted gpa
I agree with the person above. He has good test grades & ec’s with pretty good gpa (since you said the school sends a lot of people to top schools). I seriously don’t think you should apply to swarthmore for kicks! That being said, I think he’ll make it into pretty much all of these schools except for claremont mckenna and maybe tufts.

His ECs and SAT I look great! His GPA is on the low side but an upward trend definitely helps. Maybe he can write about how he’s grown over the years in an essay or two?

Unfortunately I really don’t know much about many of the schools on his list but I think he’s got great chances at Haverford and maybe high match for Swarthmore. I just looked up Davidson and Carleton and based on studying their websites + wiki I’d say he’s got a good chance. W&M on the other hand may be a little iffy. I know quite a few great applicants who’ve been rejected and some with worse stats than your son who’ve gotten in. I really have no idea what’s going on down in Williamsburg…

I really can’t say anything about the others. Sorry
