Chances at Top Schools

I am currently a junior and I'm looking at some very competitive schools:
Brown
UPenn
Yale
Cornell
McGill
Brandeis

As of right now, my first choice is Brown. I'm interested in microbiology/chemistry.

I don't know how different my school's GPA system is, so I'll explain it. Our GPA is weighted on a scale of 5; we multiply the number of credits, which is the number of times a class meets per week, by a quality point index and divide by the number of total credits. If you receive an A (we don't have + or -) for high honors and AP classes, the QPI is 5. The QPI for honors classes is 4.5 and regular classes are 4. The QPI drops a point for each drop in letter grade (Bs=4,3.5,3). Because we are required to take gym, which is a regular class, and other honors classes during freshman year, it's impossible to get a 5.0. The highest GPA possible is around a 4.75/4.8, but that's very rare.

Objective:
White male
GPA: approximately 4.74-4.75 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
PSAT: 228
SAT: 2300 (740W, 780R, 780M)
SAT II: Chemistry-800
I'm going to take Math II and Biology in June

Freshman year:
Honors Bio (no HH): A
Algebra II high honors: A
French 3 honors (no HH): A
World Lit HH: A
Global Studies honors (no HH): A
Honors electives: A
Gym: A

Sophomore year:

APUSH1: A
French IV HH: A
English 10 HH: A
Trig/Calc HH: A
AP Music Theory: A
Chem honors (no HH): A
Gym: A

Junior year:
AP Bio: A
Macroeconomics HH: A
AP Lang and Comp: A
AP Calc BC: A
APUSH2: I'm getting an A, but I may get a B
AP French V: A
Gym: A

Projected Senior year courses:
AP Chem
AP Physics C (I or II)
AP World History
AP Lit and Comp
Calc III HH (post AP)
French VI HH (post AP)
Gym: A

By the time I graduate, I will have (hopefully) taken 11 AP classes.
Rank: Top 5% out of 500 (our school doesn't individually rank, only up to the top 5%)

Subjective/Extracurriculars:

School of Visual and Performing Arts: Our school is known for the performing arts. For about 5 months of the school year, I go to rehearsal for both a musical review/showcase and a musical for three hours, usually every weekday from 3-6. This is a very big part of my life.

I'm in a selective a cappella group; about 50 kids tried out this year and 6 made it. We have rehearsal twice a week and we perform in the local area for free.

Violin for a year

Voice lessons every other weekend

Science scholar program freshman year

Garden State Equality Community Service

Hopefully a job this summer

National Honors Society

Clubs:

Gay/Straight Alliance every Monday
Food Director of the Save Darfur Club (meets every Tuesday)
Secretary of Science Olympiad (meets every other Tuesday); we made it to states this year!
Math League once a month
Chemistry Olympics
Vice President and Cofounder of French Club

Other ECs:

Cooking:
I've been cooking for many years and for a while I thought I wanted to be a chef. I've made over 100 chocolate bars for a Yale a cappella group, catered school events, and directed the food preparations for an event that made almost $3000 dollars for the Darfur Genocide victims. I'm also a contributor to a project that is attempting to bake 400,000 cookies to represent those killed in Darfur.

I founded and still lead an organization in which high school students prepare homemade food and sell it for charity around my town. I also made a website for it. We've raised over $350 dollars.

What are my chances at these schools?
Thanks!

Edit: Co-president of Science Olympiad

Also our a cappella concerts count as community service because they’re free.

Anyone? I’d really appreciate it :)

You seem to have great ECs and good stats. Because Ivies are always unpredictable, I can’t say you’ll definitely get in, but you have a fighting chance. Good luck :)

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1072869-what-do-you-think-my-chances.html</a></p>

You have amazing extracurriculars, so I think you have a great chance at all of these schools. As always though, the ivies are unpredictable, but I wish you good luck!

Thanks a lot! I’ll chance you back SillyStokey

as sillystokey said the ivy’s are unpredictable, but people i know got in with scores similar to yours last year.Although their SAT scores were slightly lower LOL. mid 21 - 22 hundreds. Anyways you stand a great chance at all of these places

chance mine?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1102111-what-my-chances-ucsd-ucd-uci-ucsb-ucsc.html</a></p>

i’m going to say that you’ll probably get into cornell.

i think you’re definitely in at brandeis. don’t know anything about mcgill, but you’re probably in there too.

i’d say that you’ll get into brown and upenn too haha.

yale is a shot in the dark, as it is for like everyone, but you’re definitely competitive

Thanks! Yeah a lot of these schools are unpredictable.

Also I’ll probably apply early decision.

Brown- Reach
UPenn- Reach
Yale- High Reach
Cornell- Low Reach
McGill- Low Reach
Brandeis- Match

You have incredible stats, but the schools you are looking at are very unpredictable. I like that you cook too, it shows diversity!

chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1102501-chance-columbia-upenn-cornell-cmu-umich-northwestern-georgia-tech-rpi.html</a></p>

Thanks. I know it’s not really possible to even come close to a definitive answer for these schools.

Update:

Math II: 740 (will retake)
Biology M: 800

Update:

I know AP scores aren’t as important as other aspects of an application, but I got my scores today:

Biology: 5
U.S. History: 5
Lang and Comp: 5
Calculus BC: 5
French: 4

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1168613-chances-congressional-page-columbia-ed-will-chance-back.html</a>
don’t bother retaking the Math II, the colleges just want to see your highest 2 scores, so it would be pointless when you have 2 800s. (if you don’t believe me check the website of any ivy league/prestigious college)

HOW’D YOU GET YOUR AP SCORES??? THEY DON’T COME OUT UNTIL TOMORROW??? if you apply early to Brown you’ve got a really good chance. especially being gay you’ll have a lot of good things to write about because of the UNJUST PERSECUTION OF SOCIETY AND GOVERNMENT ON GAYS!!! (I’m really liberal haha). so funny b/c we both are involved in cooking ECs, and you’re the only person that I’ve seen who has done something with cooking on this website other than myself.

If you apply ED to Brown I would guess that you would get in, but then again I’m not sure just b/c it’s so hard to get in.

Penn would probably be a low reach for you, which is about as good as it gets for penn, cornell might even be a high match for you.

Yale will be tough but you definitely have a shot.

McGill and Brandeis are safeties. Consider applying to some public ivies like UNC UVA Michigan Berkeley or UCLA.

chance me back!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1168613-chances-congressional-page-columbia-ed-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Yeah I’m considering not retaking it. I know a lot of schools exercise score choice, but do they do the same thing with SAT IIs (will they only see the Chemistry and Bio scores)?

The AP scores actually came out last night around 5!

Oh yeah that is interesting. I’ve never seen anyone else here interested in cooking either. Hopefully it will set us apart :D

Thank you so much!!

i think that they will see all your SAT II scores, but they will only consider your two highest, and they’ll see all your old ones so it’s pointless

Oh I thought you could choose which subject tests to send (so if I got a higher score on math I could send that one instead of the 740), but if they only consider two I guess it doesn’t matter.

Also I don’t think I’ll apply to Brandeis. I have an updated list:

McGill
Vassar
Johns Hopkins (maybe)
Rutgers
Stanford
Harvard
Yale
Princeton (maybe)
Brown (possible ED)
Cornell (possible ED)
UPenn
UChicago (maybe)
