I'm only a junior, but I was wondering my chances at the following schools:
MIT, caltech and chicago EA, RD at harvard, princeton, stanford, columbia, u of michigan.

plan to major in physics

12th:

European History
Biology
Microeconomics

senior schedule includes multivariable calculus/linear algebra

being able to do relatively well on a test doesn't mean one should like it. act tests things more commonly tested in schools and your score depends more on what you have put into school and not what you have put into test prep. so I like it better :)

I would say your chances at MIT and Caltech are low with a 740 math and no significant math/science ECs.

HPSC are reaches. Your stats are average (a little below for some) and again, no outstanding ECs. Those schools reject half of the perfect score candidates and at least half of val applicants. Who knows with great essay and recs.

UMich should be a safety if you apply early.

do you think I should retake my sat's or would my 35 act make up for the 740 math? and would a school like mit realize that i may not have too many science resources. would the independent study physics ap/olympiad semis show that i can take advantage of what resources I have?

I don't know the AP scale. If your math score on it equates to 800 or very close to it, just submit that.

If you truly live somewhere with no opportunities, and that ties in with a low income and poor school, maybe MIT will view you in a different light. But if there are community colleges and universities nearby, your school is decent and you are middle class or above, they'll hold you to a high standard.

well, my high school is very focused on humanities things but our science department is basically nonexistant. we've sent like one kid to mit in the last 30 years :)

I'm aware my science ecs are lacking because of this, but would my somewhat decent nonscience ec's mean that i have a better chance at a school like harvard or princeton than MIT? would i have a better chance getting in if i applied early to harvard than early to mit?

Your ECs are decent, but in my opinion, not Harvard or Princeton calibre. Again, I don't know ACTs, but your SATs are very average for a white/Asian non legacy or athlete.

I see you as a stronger candidate at a lower ivy, but they will all still be reaches. You need to have some match and safety schools.

35 act is about equivalent to a 1580 old sat. not sure about the new one. would mich be enough of a safety for me? is there much chance of me being rejected there? additionally, you haven't mentioned anything about uchicago ea. would i have much of a chance there either? could it be considered a match school for me? thanks.

i know my ec's are slightly weak, but if I get amazing recs and write good essays, do I still have at least some chance? i'm pretty confident i can get very detailed best of career recs from two of my teachers

Yes, I think Chicago is a match school. The 35 SAT translating to 1580 makes lower ivies reatch/match schools and it seems you would have a good chance of getting into one. Don't know which is best for physics. I think Mich is a safety if you apply early, but you should have 2 safeties just to be, well, safe.

i'm pretty sure i'll try ea to chicago and maybe mit since you can do multiple ea's with these schools, add a few safeties and then pray for some good luck in rd applications.
