Chances at top UCs?

I’m a senior for so-cal who has recently applied to a few UC’s and like a lot of people, am pretty nervous, so I would like to look at my chances at some of the top UCs (uscb, ucsd, ucd, ucla, ucb).

Stats:

UCGPA: ≈ 3.97

UWGPA (9-12): 3.71

WGPA (9-12): 4.16

UWGPA (10-12): 3.74

WGPA (10-12): 4.31

Sat I: 2160

Sat II (low):

640 math II

650 bio

670 chem

630 world history

Extracurriculars:

Research Internship - lab, own project, focus on essay, will submit to google science fair

100+ volunteer hours at hospital and with Japanese exchange student

Co-President of Model United Nations Club - a couple research/position awards

President/Founder Of Finance and Investment Club

President/Founder Political Debate Club - host conferences with students to debate on pertinent political topics with real time fact checking - another focus on essay

Essays: Really great essays, worked with some of the best writers available at universities and college counseling location and got great reviews

Thank You!!!

UC Berkeley might be a reach but not really because of your great ECs and essays. I honestly think you’ll get into all the UCs haha.

UCB, UCLA, and UCSD are all high reaches. They are heavily numbers oriented.

You’ll get at least two of UCI, UCD, UCSB, it really depends who reads your application.

Numbers wise what do you think is hurting me the most? I think my sat scores are okay but I’m guessing the sat IIs and maybe my GPA.

SAT 2’s suggest some form of grade inflation. GPA hurts, a lot. SAT isn’t all that jazz either.

Your GPA is hurting you most for the top UCs.

UCLA/UCB - reach
UCSD - low reach
UCD - match

With my weighted 10-12 gpa being 4.31 with 9 AP classes and my UC gpa being 3.97 ( i think i calculated it correctly) what would be a good gpa for those UCs?

^For the top 2 UCs your need as much as .2 extra pts on UC GPA to be competitive

okay thank you very much

I would also like to note that in our school we have a 4 x 4 schedule meaning we have 8 classes per year (4 per semester) so we have 16 classes with both 10 and 11th grade, giving us 32 semesters or in our case 32 quarters and if I were to get all As and meet the max 8 AP semesters, I can have a maximum UC GPA of 4.25 ---- (32 x 4 + 8)/32

I don’t know if that makes a difference.

"UCGPA: ≈ 3.97

WGPA (10-12): 4.31"

Are you calculating your uncapped or capped (max = 8 honors/AP bonus points) UC GPA? UCs use the uncapped GPA for admissions purposes. The capped GPA is used only to determine if you’re guaranteed admission to UC Merced through the state-wide path.

The 3.97 is capped.

What major are you applying for?

What’s your uncapped GPA? UCB has a 4.39 average and UCLA has a 4.31 average - these would be almost mathematically impossible if they were capped.

My uncapped would be 4.28 I think.

Does uncapped mean if I took 9 AP classes I get 18 points instead of the 8 point cap?

I’m applying for biology.

That’s right, you get one bonus point per honors/AP semester. Did you also add in honors classes (pre-calc, chem, physics, language, etc.)?

You’re pretty solid for UCSD, UCSB, and UCD. UCLA is a match (could go either way, but your test scores and leadership will help), and UCB is a reach.

@goldenbear2020 , In reference to your Post #13, what you quoted as UCLA (uncapped) GPA of 4.31 was the “enrolled” average. The UCLA “admits” average was 4.39, for year 2014 (comparable to UCB’s).

UCB-Reach
UCLA-Reach
UCSD- Low Reach
UCD- High Match/Low Reach
UCSB- High Match

Also, UCB and UCLA are the only UCs that use the uncapped weighted GPA. The rest use the capped UC GPA.
