Hi everyone,
I am a current Community College student in California and was curious about my chances in being accepted into Ohio State. I am currently a sophomore and attended a private university for my first semester of freshman year and then transferred to a community college for my second semester. I am currently in my 3rd semester. At my private university (first semester), I got a 3.8 and at my community college (second semester) I got a 4.0. So overall, I have a 3.9 (technically, it’s a 4.0 as only 2 classes are transferable; both of which I got As in). I plan to finish this semester with a 4.0 as well. My major is Accounting. I have sent in my application and they want me to send my community college transcript after I complete this semester as I am taking the required Calculus course. I have heard so many stories of people making it in from the Ohio area but wanted to know if I would make it too since I’m an out of state student. I would love to hear some feedback. Go Bucks!
I wouldn’t get hung up on one school. You’re looking at paying double or even triple the tuition costs going out of state. Another problem is transferable credits. Public universities are generally good about accepting credits from in-state colleges. Out of state is a whole different can of worms. It’s not uncommon for students to go to a nonresident school and find their credits are mostly worthless.
Also, the most you can take out in student loans for a 4 year degree is 27k. Your parents have to pay the rest. If you’re parents are willing to pay that tuition, then OSU should be fine, but expect to add another year to your degree. If not, then it’s NOT worth it, especially in a state like California. You have plenty of options.
@coolguy40 I recognize the higher cost of going to a out-of-state university. The thing is, Ohio State is one of the best colleges for my major and the other colleges in California that are near the level of Ohio State I can’t transfer in to or it is even more expensive for me to attend (ex.USC). I know that I want to go to Ohio State as it has been my goal to transfer there throughout my college career. My parents and I have discussed the expenses and payments and we have come to a group conclusion that if I am accepted then we will see how much but most likely I will attend as they are willing to pay and I am willing to contribute. Thanks for the information as it helped clarify some financial questions I had. But this is a question regarding my chances at acceptance, not my financial worries.
Are you a California resident? If so, why Ohio?
I am a Californian resident. The reason why I want to go to Ohio state university is because Ohio State has an amazing business program and it’s been my dream school since I was a kid. I have always loved the idea of going out of state and I have always loved their football team and the college experience it offers. Also, coming out of Ohio state with a bachelors degree from the fisher school is business would look great for when I am job searching
Fisher is a good school, but it’s surprising you’d come all the way from California for it. In the Midatlantic, Miami-Ohio is considered better overall, and Penn State’s Smeal as well as Maryland’s Smith have stronger networks; UCincinnati wins due to its strong co-op culture even if it’s less selective (but it’s developed great honors programs to compete with tOSU and Miami). In short, Fisher is roughly where SDSU’s business school would be - solid - but if you’re interested in business schools in the region, include other universities on your list. For accounting, I’d also add Baruch, although you wouldn’t have the “full college experience”.
Now, your odds are excellent, so if you can afford to go, congratulations!
@MYOS1634 Thanks for information. I really appreciate it. I do have some other colleges on my list, but The Ohio State University is at the top of it. As I said before, The Ohio State University is my dream school and I have been working towards attending there for the past 5 years of my life. Ohio State is my first option, all other schools come second to it. Of course when i get accepted into the colleges I applied to, I will look into each of them not only from a education view but also a financial view as I want to go to the university where I get the most from my education. So far, Ohio State stands out to me the most as it has a huge network of alumni and is viewed as an incredible school for business by every employer. Thanks for the insight as well referring to my chances at acceptance. Your the first one to answer the original question
