At Tulane I am a deferred EA Applicant now going to be in the RD Pool and at Wake Forest I am a RD applicant. Both require a submission of an updated mid year transcript in January, which I feel will help me, as I received All As, including As in 5 AP Classes.
SAT: 1420 (730 R/W, 690 M)
UW GPA: 3.959 (now a 3.964 after first semester)
W GPA: 4.45 (Now a 4.5)
UW Class Rank: 26/135 (likely a little higher now)
W Class Rank: 16/135 (likely a little higher now)
SAT Subject Test US History: 760
Extracurriculars:
Varsity Swimming (7th-12th grade)
Key Club (9th-12th grade)
Elementary School Tutor (10th and 11th grade)
NHS (10th-12th grade) and treasurer (12th grade)
SGA Senator (11th grade)
Library Volunteer (9th and 10th grade)
Club Swimming (9th-10th grade)
Also for Tulane, I did not do the optional teacher recommendations for EA and I will now have 2 teachers do letters of recommendation on my behalf in January. For Wake Forest, I did one teacher rec, which I feel was strong.
Other:
AP Scholar with Distinction (11th grade)
AP Score: World (5), APUSH (4), Psych (4), Gov (5), Macro (5), Micro (5), Lang (4), Seminar (3), Physics 1 (2)
For Tulane, I don’t think I self reported the ap scores but I did for Wake. Should I send them in the AP scores despite the 2 on physics?
Not so sure about Tulane, but my older sister goes to Wake so I can be more accurate there. I believe you have a solid chance. Your GPA and W GPA are both very impressive and your test scores are above average for Wake. I would submit your AP scores, especially if they correlate with your intended major. The fives in the social studies field would greatly help your application if you want to major in something related. Is there a way to not submit the physics score?
The letters of rec will help at Tulane (so will the mid-year report–straight As in five APs is no easy feat:)). If you can self-report, why not just do that and skip the Physics I score? no reason to report scores that won’t reflect well on you and won’t allow you credit if you’re not required to. I agree with previous comment, though. High scores in social studies (especially 5 in world how did you manage that) will help a lot. Your stats are really, really strong and you seem well-spoken so I imagine you have good essays, which is important. ECs are solid but not necessarily stand-out, so features like good essays, good recs, high AP or SAT II will be important. I think both schools are high matches/low reaches. Best of luck!!
@gcat05 I think that there was an option to self-report on the original application but I did not do it before I submitted it and I cannot get back into it. So, I think that for Tulane I will have to send my AP scores via the college board if I want them to be taken into consideration at Tulane. I think they’d be stuck seeing the physics 1 score unfortunately. How much do you think it would hurt? Or do you think getting to see the high social studies would outweigh the physics 1 damage as my intended major is economics? I will try to email my Tulane admissions counselor about my AP scores though to see if I can self-report and my options.
The biggest worry I have with Tulane is my deferral. I just feel like it seems like it will lead to a rejection. Also, for Tulane to be a good option for me come April I would need some merit money in addition to the need-based aid. Do you think I have any shot at merit money at Tulane RD after already being deferred EA?
Ah, I see. That’s a bummer I don’t think it should hurt you too much (not many people score well on Physics I anyway–I think that might be the exam with the lowest pass rate). I think it depends on what major you expressed interest in on your application–was it a social science or a STEM related field? If the former, I think the high social studies definitely outweigh the physics I score. If the latter, I probably would not report the 2 in physics. The social studies scores won’t have too much bearing on your application in that case anyway.
I was deferred at Tulane too, so I think I get it. Deferrals suck (I’d almost prefer initial rejection), I have no idea where I stand. Like I said, I think you’re a strong match for Tulane and still absolutely have a shot–they could have deferred you for any number of reasons, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you were accepted in the spring Tulane is generous with merit to my understanding–did you apply for any specific scholarships or submit a portfolio or anything? That could help a lot. I think being deferred EA does imply a little that we’re less likely to receive merit, but anything could happen.
Yeah, I put down my intended major as economics, so I think I am going to go ahead and send them in through College Board. Thanks for your help!
And yeah, Deferrals really do suck. In the day leading up to my decision coming online, I had a gut feeling I had gotten deferred and was honestly kind of hoping they would just reject me so I could at least move on. But then again, I still would like to have the chance to go to Tulane if possible so I guess it is better at the end of the day. It just seems like everyone got deferred. Do you know if Tulane rejected anyone EA?
And no, I did not apply for any of the scholarships like deans honors that required the separate application just cause I felt like I would have no chance, and I also did not send in a portfolio or anything.
And at this point I am hoping for a nice surprise in March of an acceptance with some merit money. I think stranger things have happened.
Also, could you chance me for UF? I’d be glad to chance you if you have your stats posted as well.
