Chances at U of Maryland for Out of State Student

<p>SAT: 1220 (CR 580 M 640) Im aware that the middle average for here is 1260</p>

<p>Freshman year I faced tough social anxiety which limited my academic performance and EC's. I fought overcome it and my grades as well as rigor of courses significantly increased. My essay is based off of this situation. This why my GPA is so low. Will Maryland understand this?</p>

<p>I understand my SAT is below the average for the school. Will this affect me?
Also I am applying early action will this also help?</p>

<p>What is your intended major? As you most likely know, UMD is very numbers driven. If it’s an LEP major, it’s a reach. Otherwise, I’m not sure, but the fact that you are from CA might be in your favor. Perhaps someone else can give you some input. I could just tell you were getting anxious. :P</p>

<p>what ethnicity are you if you don’t mind me asking? being an out of state student actually works against you… UMDCP tends to be more lenient on in state. If you are an underrepresented minority, then you have a change. if not, then it might be a bit of a reach unless you have an amazing essay and letters of rec. also, what was your total SAT score and ap scores? those might help. and it might be a boost if you applied early action. i’m applying as well, but i am in state! :slight_smile: </p>

<p>@nehc97‌ I’m white so that doesn’t help. But my highest SAT section was writing at 650, but they don’t count this section. Overall my SAT is 1870. My essay was on overcoming social anxiety which explains my low freshman grades so I think that might help myself a little. And I did apply early action.</p>
