I'm fairly certain my essays will be fine. I've done extensive volunteering and community service, but my participation in extracurricular activities and clubs is minimal. How possible is it to get into UC Berkeley or UT Austin with my horrible GPA but generally high test scores? I'm a Texas resident, by the way. (If you have the time, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me my chances at UCLA, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, and U of M!)

Calculate your UC GPA, see link: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Your test scores very competitive, but your GPA will be a problem. For UCLA/UCB, average UC GPA was 4.2+ and for the rest of the UC’s you listed the average GPA was 4.0+. Also for the UC GPA calculation, you only use 10-11th grades and only 8 semesters of AP classes accepted for the extra Honors points since your OOS. You need to meet a minimum UC GPA of 3.4 to apply. Even if you meet minimum, low chance on acceptance.

Since you are OOS, you will receive little to no financial aid for the UC’s so your price tag will be minimum $23K not including room/board to full pay at $55K.

UCLA/UCB/UCSD: Reach
UCD/UCI/UCSB: Low Reach/High Match (UCSB may overlook low GPA for high ACT)

If you are full pay, your chances will increase.

I live in California, so I don’t know much about UT Austin. Instead, I’ll chance you for each UC
UCLA/UCB: reach (GPA is too low)
UCSD: low reach
UCD/UCSB: match
UCI: low match
UCR/UCSC/UCM: safety

Thanks for the informative replies! Gumbymom, I used the link you provided and found that my UC GPA is 3.21, which is lower than the 3.4 minimum for OOS students. Do you know how the admission by exam consideration works? How likely is it for a student to be admitted by exam?

I am unsure about the acceptance for admission by exam, but what have seen posted is not too encouraging. I suggest you contact admissions and talk to them. They could give you the best advice.

Hey, not sure if this will help, but I was accepted into both UT Austin (automatic admission) and Cornell University, and am currently attending UT Austin. My GPA was 3.9 (unweighted and weighted) and I got 5’s and 4’s on all of my AP tests. My SAT was only 2050 though.

I would say while grades are an important part of admissions, as long you can articulate your passions through your essays or through your choice of extracurriculars and volunteering, then it will definitely boost your application. Colleges would rather choose a student with a clear passion and interest than another cookie cutter 4.0 gpa student who hasn’t really done anything noteworthy.
