chances at uc berkeley / harvey mudd

i've been waiting a while to do this and now i'm finally a senior

so for those with knowledge about the subject and who wouldn't mind, please let me know what my chances are for:

uc berkeley
harvey mudd
u penn

my gpa is not outstanding in the least and the same goes for my sat score

sat: 2130: 760 math, 690 cr, 680 writing (2090 first time i took it)

sat 2 math2c: 740 =/
taking sat 2 physics this year

cum gpa: 4.03

ap test:
calc bc: 5 (soph year)
physics: 4 (junior year)
english: 4 (junior year)
history: 1 (junior year) i really messed that one up

taking
ap stats and ap enlgish this year

rank: currently 6/97...small class i know

ec...this part is kinda boring...i'm just pasting in a resume i have saved up

so all in all i'm an ok student with ok scores and ok ec's who wants to know his chances at a good school

thanks

oh and it's probably important to know i live in cali so it's not out of state for berkeley

-ryan

honestly, reach for both. i went to see a college counselor, and they told me that while uc's love cosmos and all that, it's all about the numbers. if you have over a 4.3, you're safe, 4.1, it's iffy, under that, good luck, you'll need it.

for engineering you need at least a 4.4 though - but get this, a kid was rejected from cal engineering because he didnt write about ee in his essay. it's brutal,

harvey mudd - you need 4.3, 4.4

whoamg may be am exaggerating a bit, but he has the right idea in that both of those schools really are about the numbers. A medium-ish GPA and SAT score might really hurt you. There's not a whole lot you can do, but some last minute SAT studying and retake may really be worth your while. If you can manage a 2200+ that will help some; a 2300+ would probably double your current odds.

thanks for the responses...and the honesty haha

it's just weird because i have two friends who got into berkeley with mid 1900's on their sat's..but their gpa was 4.3 to 4.4...

is my cum right now (4.03) the one they will make their decision on? or do they add in first sem of senior year?

btw i want to major in math not engineering

yeah i don't think i can pull a 2300...probably a 2200

Hit 2200 on the SAT, and you be a Match to Berkeley as a Math major. Also, try to get a 800 on IIC Math (hint: learn to use a TI-89 to do all the real work).

calculator is nto really needed. i don't own one and I got an 800.

berkeley - reach

that 5 on the calc bc test sophomore year will help for mudd
the 4 on the physics test will hurt for mudd

cr_book:

UCB: Slight Reach

is the 4.03 a UC GPA?

I don't think it would hurt. It would just not really help his application.

I think both of these schools are slight reaches.

OK, I have a couple of questions based on the OP's comments...am particularly interested in how Berkeley and Mudd might view these questions!

1) Do high school courses taken in middle school get counted in GPA (weighted or not)? I'm talking about algebra I, geometry, alg II, and two years of HS Spanish.

2) Do schools look at what year you took the APs and take that score into account? For example, would a 5 on AP Calc BC as a sophomore carry more weight than taking it as a junior or senior?

3) Will not taking AP Chem be a killer? (will take Physics C senior year, will have taken two other physics electives and biochem) Will not be able to schedule AP Chem (a double period class on block schedule -- kills the schedule!) due to conflicts with MV/DiffEq, Discrete Math, Complex Analysis, Adv. Geometry and LinAlg, and post-AP comp sci electives.

15 yo junior, 740 M, 750 CR, 730 Writing (composite PSATs), Math IIc 800
GPA 3.81 UW, 4.53 W, including HS classes taken in middle school (3.83/4.65 without middle school grades)

not a CA resident

5 AP BC Calc (10th)
5 AB Comp Sci (10th)
5 US Gov't (10th)

Taking junior year:
AP Stat
AP World Hist
AP English Comp

Taking senior year:
AP Physics C
AP Microecon
AP Macroecon
AP Comparative Gov't

Looking at ED @ Mudd as a joint CS/Math...

HS courses are not taken into account. I took the same things in middle school. They only see that you did take them (so that they don't misunderstand and think that you skipped classes).

Not really. AP scores really aren't all that important anyway as long as you get 4/5s.

No.

Take out the middle school classes from your GPA. As of right now you definitely have a chance, but you have another 1.5 years to go.

what makes you think i'm exaggerating about anything? it's tough to get into ucb college of engineering and harvey mudd isn't easy either. the people who i know got into harvey mudd and are attending are those who got into berkeley but not stanford.

UCB: Reach (OOS, Engineering)

Seriously you need 2200+ for these schools and around 800 SAT IIs in Math and Sciences. Work harder, you still got 1.5 years to go until apps are due, so work harder, especially at the Math IIC test.

well it's only weighting courses that are uc approved to be weighted but it's not the competitive gpa because it includes my frosh year

to the op:

uc's go by the numbers and for engineering, your ec's are looked at more.

here's a strong match example for ucb eng (in order of importance):
[IN STATE] [OOS add .2 to gpa, 100 to sat, awards to ec's]
gpa: 4.4
sat: 2200+
math2:800
chem/phys:770+
ec's: technology-related
essays: one should be engineering-related

you are too ec-based for the uc's. a 4.0uw/2400/800/800 few-ec kid has a better chance than a 3.5/2000/700/700 one who had loads of ec's.

CountingDown:

UCB: Slight Reach (out of state, Engineering)

whoamg,

The maximium UC capped GPA is 4.33, isn't it? =/

for ELIGIBILITY and at the lower uc's yes. for ucb engineering though, 4.3 is in the middle, so they have to uncap it. ucb and ucla uncap when it comes to admissions. maybe ucsd uncaps too, but cal and la have to uncap for sure.

Would UCs recalculate an OOS GPA to fit with their parameters? (and where would I find those parameters, if they are available?) Do they take into account the strength of the HS?
