Um, what? Berkeley is known to be primarily a science school–it has a reputation for engineering and the hard sciences, not to mention the social sciences. (And of course, it’s tops in arts/humanities, too.)

Cal’s ranked #1 in physical sciences/math, social/behavioral, and arts/humanities. It’s #5 for biological sciences and #2 for engineering.

Of the 27 sciences that Berkeley was ranked in, it placed in the top 10 in 26 of them. The same can’t be said of UCLA.

Of course, this is a bit old. If you want more recent:

I see Berkeley ranked in the top 3 for multiple disciplines (I don’t see UCLA).

Ranked third there.

And ranked in the top few there, too.

Of course, these are grad rankings. If you want undergrad, just search the forum for “gourman [insert discipline]” (collegehelp has probably posted every list for somebody or another) – Berkeley is almost always ranked in the top 10. Now, no doubt UCLA is a great science school and competes well with Berkeley; but to say that it is “stronger in the sciences” and would thus help students more in becoming doctors is untrue. In fact, I think Berkeley’s med school placement % is a bit higher than UCLA’s. And UCLA reputedly doesn’t like accepting its own undergrads to its med school, so not even in-state status helps.
