Please tell me if I'm wasting my time applying to engineering at UCB, UCLA, MIT (dream school)
Here are my stats:

I'm sooooo nervous about the low English score (I really suck at it) on both ACT and SAT

Not wasting time. MIT is unlikely but you have a real shot at the UCs.

Definitely not wasting your time. But, try to get that CR up. They like to see as close to 700 as possible. Have you thought about CalTech?

Thanks for the quick reply’s. I wasn’t sure with my low English scores if I even had a chance. So will the UC’s tend to look more at my math and science grades and scores? I know I’m a real long shot for MIT with my SAT’s and ACT’s. I’m going to retake ACT. What do you think is the lowest I can possibly get in English to have a shot? I don’t want to put a lot of effort into it (as I am so busy) if there is no real chance.

For the UCs your SAT score is pretty high. Are you in-state? As for MIT, they themselves write that any SAT section or subject test score above 750 makes you competitive. If you are unable to raise your CR score to at least 680 (which I believe is the low end of their 25%-75% score range), you’ll probably need other great items on your transcript or application to make them forgive your relatively low CR score.

You’re not even a long-shot for MIT because of your standardized tests. Everybody is a long-shot.

Blizapp–do you think they will just put my app in the “discard pile” right away due to the standardized tests? I know everyone is a long shot BUT…some not as long as others. I think I have a lot to offer, but my English scores are probably a real deal breaker.

Dignified1–I think I am improving due to my AP lit class (great teacher) and might be able to get CR to 650-660. Would MIT even consider my 4 on AP Lang? And yes I am in state for UC’s (ELC). Do you think I have a reasonably good chance to get into both UCB and UCLA and have UCSD as a safety–or may this even be risky?

The acceptance rate for ELC students at UCB last year was 66%, 60% at UCLA and 89% (!) at UCSD. My D (also ELC) has those listed as her safeties now. And, when you factor in your above 2000 SAT score, the rate is higher. Click on the link below to see the Berkeley stats for 2010.

As for MIT, they will consider everyone. If you really want to go there, try.
