Could anybody give me a realistic chance at UCF?

Hispanic Male, Senior OOS (TX)
My GPA is 2.8 (Bad beginning of HS haha)
SATs: 1550 out of 2400
Not too many EC's but I've held a job throughout all of my Junior & Senior years.
9th grade: Took 3 Honors Classes
10th: Held 1 Honor Class
No APs
Took 3 years of foreign language at my school instead of the required 2.

I'm working to bring my GPA to AT LEAST a 3.0UW by the end of the semester and I'm also aiming for a 1700-1800 on the upcoming SAT.

Do you guys think I have a chance? I'm really trying to decided on whether to apply early or wait for the current semester to finish so I'll have a higher GPA and SAT on my transcript. It's killing me!! haha.. I'm thinking if I just apply now then I'll get a decision sooner, save the stress, and know if I'm wasting my time with UCF or not. I just don't want that GPA to instantly kill my chances :(

Whats your weighted GPA? and what is your SAT with just math and reading, writing really isnt as important. Your stats arent too bad but you will have to bring your test scores and GPA up. Apply for summer to improve your chances. Schools generally dont update GPA until a semester is over so you would have to wait until sometime after christmas break to apply. I know that in my old high school they didnt update GPAs until around February, which is a long ways away. So I think its better to just apply summer now because there really isnt a whole bunch you can do with your GPA in one semester to offset 6 previous semesters of grades. Waiting too long could harm you because of the amount of people who would apply and get in between now then. Applying for summer is a great option because you are more likely to be accepted and you can ease into college life better. Good Luck!!

I’d suggest you call and ask to speak to an undergraduate admission’s officer. Explain that you are from out of state, too. One problem w/ waiting too long to apply is that UCF accepts students on a rolling basis, meaning as they come in … not by or on certain dates, necessarily. UCF is also a state university that receives state funds and probably has a cap on how many OOS students they can accept. I would ask the UCF counselor if it’s more important to show huge interest by applying early – risking deferrment or refusal until your grades improve – or if it would be better to wait. My concern is that if you wait … there won’t be a lt of slots left available to you.

I’m not sure bout the weighted GPA but my math is 500 and my reading is 560 and yea I’m definitely trying to bring that up. And as for applying for for the summer, does that mean I would begin my freshman year “full on” during the summer?? I don’t mind getting a few classes out the way but I’d really prefer to begin most general reqs with the other freshman in the fall so I get the whole experience of being “new”… lol

Oh and thanks for the suggestion zebes, I’m gonna try and talk to a UCF counselor soon and get their opinion on the issue.

To be honest, with your GPA, it’ll be quite a reach to get accepted for fall term, unless you do amazingly well on your SAT’s…

I would just apply RIGHT NOW for summer term, and if anything, they will just defer you until you send in your first semester grades, or any new test scores.

I actually emailed an admission counselor from UCF about this, as I have a mediocre GPA, and low test scores, and her advice for me was to apply early. (Many people in here have also mentioned that applying early WILL help.)

It’s better to get deferred, then to be rejected right away!

My brother had a 3.2 and better test scores and he was rejected, honestly I do not think it is likely. Compare your stats to the stats of the average accepted student. The school GPA average is about a 3.7. It’s worth a shot though.

My UW is a 3.4, W is a 3.8. My GPA according to UCF’s scale is a 3.66. My ACT is 20- retaking it this month. Was in 2 clubs Junior year, and VP of one of them. Also President of one of the clubs this year. About 75 community service hours. Class rank 10/291. By the time I graduate, I will have taken 6 AP and 6 honor courses. My test score worries me :(

Yea you should be good as long as you bring that 20 up :). Your UW is WAAAYY better than mine lol, 2.8 UW is what happens when you utterly do nothing your sophmore year :(… Haha hopefully my W is better when compared to the average. How exactly does UCF calculate their W GPA?

Meh, I want to attend fall term, but with those test scores, I might not even get in summer term. I still have yet to turn in my applications!! Lazy lazy me! UCF calculates your GPA based on your core academic classes (meaning electives does not count), and they give extra weight to AP/honor/IB/etc…

To calculate your UCF weighted GPA, list all the hs academic classes that you have taken (math, english, foreign language, social studies, science) and the grade that you received. Take out any pluses or minuses. UCF doesn’t use them. An A is a 4.0, B is a 3.0, C is a 2.0. Add a half point (.5)for honors classes and a full point (1.0) for AP or IB classes. So, a B in a honors class is 3.5 but a B in an AP class is 4.0. Add up your points and divide by the total number of academic classes that you listed. This is how all the state universities in Florida calculate GPA.

What about an Academic elective? They say the take 3 of those. And out of all those variety electives in high school, whats considered an “academic elective” ?
