Chances at UChicago, Harvard + more

Ok so im a junior right now and im wondering what my chances are at each of these schools...BTW i would prefer you to chance as a percentage or by a 1-10 scale but any way will be valued.

MAJOR : Econ
GOAL: To become a consultant at a top tier firm (i know, practically impossible)

** Schools **

Harvard
UPenn
UChicago (sibling legacy)
Yale
Northwestern (MMSS)
University of Michigan
Carnegie Mellon
Ohio State Honors (collegium?)

** Stats **

UW GPA : 4.0
W GPA : 4.25
PSAT : 235
ACT: 34...36 math
SAT : will not take/send
Ranking :1/425
High School Type: semi competitive, sends 1 student to top school each year

** AP classes **

My school has this rule where you can only take 5 AP classes even though they offer 12. I will have my guidance counselor write about this to colleges. Also school does not offer honors classes.

AP Statistics (self study) - 5
AP Macro (self study) ----no taken ; expecting 5
AP Micro (self study -----not taken; expecting 5
AP US History ------not taken expecting 5
AP Enviromental Science -----not taken expecting 5
AP Calculus AB (no BC, take next year)---expecting 4 or more likely a 5
AP Biology -----take next year; 4 or 5
AP English -----take next year; 4 or 5

Will probably end up self studying 1 AP senior year.

** Extra Curricular **

1) MOST IMPORTANT; internship with Grameen Bank in bangladesh
2) Stepping Stones volunteer - 250 hours; help disabled kids
3) Academic Team - 4 years, captain senior year
4) Young Democrats - 3 years; president senior year, 1 award
4) Key Club - 4 years president senior year, 25 hrs of volunteering
5) NHS -- 2 years, 15 hrs of volunteering
6) Science Club - did testing at Smokey Mountains
7) County Science Challenge - 4 years; won sophomore and junior years

Hopefully i will try to get research at a local college

BTW, what else do you guys think i should do to beef up my application. And what other schools should i consider applying to.

Thanks in advance.

um, do take the SAT. if for nothing else, to make national merit finalist.

as for your list, the ECs are a little on the weak side, but i think:
harvard/yale - pretty difficult to call these ones.
upenn - 50%
uchicago - 55%
northwestern - 65%

acadec, you should learn how to read.

The OP already has taken the PSAT, getting a 235, which will qualify him for National Merit Finalist any year.

A 34 on the ACT is VERY strong - you don’t need to take the SAT. Don’t listen to what acadec says, your scores are perfectly fine. However, although I’m pretty sure that if you take the ACT you don’t need to take SAT II’s (in the case of taking the SAT over the ACT), but just double check with your schools to make sure.

Your ECs are not terrible but I see a lack of focus, definitely need to bolster them up. What kind of research are you considering at a local college? If it’s scientific, why are you trying to go into economics in college?

Continue keeping up your grades; it’s good that you’re challenging yourself by self-studying APs when limited by your school.

Do you have any awards/honors at all?

hotasice, what acadec means is that to make finalist status, you need to submit sat scores. I don’t know if you can use act scores for this, so yah, I would recommend taking sat to get finalist status.

from collegeboard, Northwestern acceptance rate: 27 percent, SAT range: 1350-1520

Chicago, 35 percent acceptance rate, 1330-1530 SAT range

Well i was thinking about doing some economics research. Im not sure but i have a contact so i think i may get it.

And i will take the SAT but unless i get a 2200 or above i will not send them.

BTW, i also played basketball all four years and had a summer job freshman-sophmore summer if that helps. And what do you think i should do to get my extra curriculars up

I agree…

pretty solid stats.. i think you have a good shot at getting in wherever you apply.. good luck.. here’s my 2 cents

Harvard - 45%
UPenn - 75%
UChicago - 80%
Yale - 50%
Northwestern - 90%
University of Mich. - in
Carnegie Mellon - good chance
ohio state honors - in

^whoa…a little too optimistic: Upenn 75%??? I don’t think so

Post #3 is incorrect as you must take the SAT I to qualify as a NMF. Harvard & Yale cannot be chanced as even the best applicants have well less than a 19% chance. Chicago, Michigan, CMU & Ohio State Honors should admit you. Penn may depend upon to which school you apply. Northwestern is likely if you apply ED, less likely RD–but still likely to be admitted. Likely at Penn CAS. Prior threads on CC have noted that the top 3 universities for National Merit Scholars (the final honor after National Merit Finalist) are Harvard, Texas & Northwestern.

Ill be applying to UPenn Cas

Your academic record is pretty impeccable, but your EC’s are relatively run-of-the-mill. I think you can see this as well as I can. Try to use these clubs that you are involved in to put some projects together that will make you stick out from the crowd. If you do, and put together good recs/essays, you’re going to have a considerable chance. You should get into one of your top four.

Oops, I apologize for my mistake/ignorance. I didn’t know.

I mean, if you WANT to try to get NMF status, go for it. But you don’t have to…frankly I think other areas (read: extracurricular activities) need all of your attention at this time.

if you can get a 235 PSAT, you should have little trouble getting an acceptable score on the SAT. it’s not much work, and certainly worth the hour or so the application takes.

Make your Chicago essay amazing. I’m one of those weirdos who’s convinced that it’s what clinched the acceptance there – because on paper, you have ten times the resume I did/do.
