Chances at UCLA (for Film)

Hello! First time posting, but I've been killing myself with panic over whether or not I can get into the UCLA film program. I'm a senior this year, and have mostly finished my application, though I have someone editing my personal statements (so far, the feedback has been mostly positive). I am chipping away at the supplemental application, and have asked two of my favorite teachers to write letters of recommendation (before anyone asks, yes these are required for this specific application).

Some statistics:
UC GPA (Weighted): 4.04 (rounded up)
UC GPA (Unweighted): 3.88
Ordinary GPA (Weighted): 3.91
Ordinary GPA (Unweighted): 3.78

SAT Combined: 2240 (got it first try)
SAT Writing: 800
SAT Critical Reading: 740
SAT Math: 700

AP Calculus AB exam: 5

Extra-Curricular Programs:
Co-President of the local public library's Teen Advisory Group (2013)
Homework Helper (I tutor children) (2011-2013)--- I figure that if I can handle legions of hyperactive children and keep them on task and learning, I can handle controlling a few actors on set.
Marching Band (2010-2013)

Sports: Men's Varsity Diving (2011-2013): I was team captain in 2013, and will be again next year. I also lettered as a freshman and placed second at leagues two years in a row. Unfortunately, UCLA does not have a men's dive team.

Can anyone provide an honest assessment of my chances from their experiences?

I am also applying to CSU Northridge, UC Santa Barbara, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and if I have extra time, CSU Long Beach (although I hate their pyramid with an illogical passion).

If it helps, I have taken several non-UC-approved Honors courses (Honors High School English 1/2, Honors Pre-Calculus 1/2, Honors Humanities 1/2, and Honors French 7/8).

I have also taken one UC-approved Honors course (Honors American Literature 1/2).

I am currently taking three AP courses: AP Statistics, AP English Language, and AP Psychology.

I think you have a good chance, especially with that SAT score

I’ve seen a lot of stuff saying that the average GPA there is like 4.27 or 4.37, though, which has me absolutely terrified…

what is the highest GPA you can get in your junior and sophomore at your school?

I don’t really know, actually. I know there’s a lot more APs available than I have taken, mainly because I have chosen courses based on personal interest. I also had mono for a good portion of Junior year, which lead me to cancel my original choice to take Calculus BC (I didn’t drop, I just never started). I made sure to mention having mono on my app.

Because I don’t know what is your school GPA standard, I would only judge you on the rest of the apps. Your SATs are amazing: 2240 will make you look good to UC Berkeley. But what is your GPA rank though? Do you know? honestly, everything else seems good (ECs are well, SAT are amazing. tries to take SAT sub to add extra point on your apps.

I am unsure of how to find out what my class rank is. Your words are otherwise encouraging to me, though. Thank you.

Your GPA and SAT scores look great. I think UCLA is definitely a match school for you!

Yes james franco teaches film studies at ucla.

James Franco…that name is familliar, but I can’t think of from where. I pay more attention to sci/fi and fantasy television (like by Joss Whedon, Steven Moffat, Douglas Adams…) To Google!

Also, I realize this program is impacted. However, it is the first year they are offering the 4-year film degree (might that make it easier?). I don’t really have any film experience, and I’m afraid that might hurt my chances.

Okay, my school doesn’t do class ranks.

Thanks for posting that, vinceh, but that’s the exact page I’ve spent the last month staring at.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who has provided feedback!
