Info I may write about in college essays:

I will be the first person in my family to go to college. I don't have my parents support or help with school work. They don't care if I get an A or a C. They stopped being able to help me with my homework years ago. My grandmother is independently wealthy, but my parents are middle/lower-middle class. My parents are divorced and have been for 4 years now. My mother kicked me out of the house 6 months ago and I have been living with my dad since then. I was born in and grew up in Hawaii. I moved to California (where I am now) when I was 11.

Also:
My math progression isn't in the normal order. I skipped Algebra II/trig and Precalc. My math classes by year are as follows:

Freshman: GATE Geometry (B)
Sophomore: AP Statistics (B, 4)
Junior: AP Calculus AB (B, probably 3-4)
Senior: no math.

Schools Interested in: (What are my chances?)

UCLA
USC
UCSD
UCSB
NYU
JHU
Columbia
Cornell
Georgetown
Stanford
UC Berkeley

thanks to anyone who will accurately tell me what they think my chances are of getting into the above schools!

Forgot to mention: I plan on majoring in either premed, biology, or biochemistry.

UCLA/Cal: Reach/far reach
UCSD: Reach
UCSB: Slight reach/match

forgot to mention, I live in Santa Barbara. (Will that help with UCSB?)

jonny1212,

Sorry, but no. If you can bring up that SAT score you'll improve your chances for UCSB a good deal. Their average for admits about 1850. You're not too far off, though, so I actually think you might be able to squeak by as a match.

UCLA: far reach
USC: far reach
UCSD: reach
UCSB: slight reach
NYU: far reach
JHU: super far reach
Columbia: super duper far reach
Cornell: super far reach
Georgetown: super far reach
Stanford: super duper uber far reach
UC Berkeley: far reach

If I were you, I'd cut down on the number of reaches, find a lot more matches and safeties. Sorry for the bleak assesment, but I figure it's better to be honest. Good luck.

jonny1212,

I agree with sfgiants. Look into slightly less competitive programs. There are plenty of good schools out there that won't require you to have that perfect SAT score.

I'd start with UCSB as your baseline and have a couple of reaches (maybe UCLA and Cal) some safe matches (UCSC and UCR) some safeties (your pick) and a few others.

okay, so UCSB, UCSC, UCR, and what others would you recommend as matches? How about Claremont McKenna? what schools could work as safeties?

Claremont McKenna is incredibly competitive. Well over 2000 average SAT and 3.9 GPA.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but have you done your homework and looked into schools that match your stats, or are you just throwing out names that you think sound cool?

i've done some research, but i've done more research on the schools themselves than if those schools match my stats. and no, im not throwing out names that i think sound cool, i'm throwing out schools that would be cool to go to. i will, however, do more research on less competitive schools and come up with an updated list of more realistic schools for me to think about.

jonny you have to face the reality of ur situation. Your GPA is set, no amount of summer school can change it significantly. The one thing you do have control of is your SAT's. I ended junior year with a 3.4 and a 3.9 w. in my head i wals ike *****! But i took a summer SAT class, worked my @ss off and i got a 2140 and a 720 in math 2c an da 670 in physics. WIth my exc the quality of schools i had a chance at changed dramatically. You have to realize your situation now too. You have to get someone to privately tutor u (if low on cash, look for a friend who scored well and have him or her show u what they did) or join a SAT tutoring program. The SAT is all you have left control of, so dont let it get away.

thanks flong. money isn't a problem, so i'll get a private SAT tutor. but hypothetically, if I were to get 2050 on the SAT, what would my chances be at the aforementioned schools, with my GPA going up by next year to probably a 3.45 and 3.85 w? (i know the slight gpa increase is pretty meaningless though)

no 3.7 to 3.99 weighted is the same. Ull need to score 2100+. kids in that grouping ^ who get a 2100 have an 80 percent better chance of getting in. Id say hit 2200 to be safe. I hit 2140 and im a match but only cuz i have a microsoft itnernship. Study alot, study everyday ur sat is ur last chance ot make a big impact on ur admisisons.

UCSB- slight reach.

Affirmative action may help you if you really are poor. I wouldn't apply to any of the schools listed besides UCSB and maybe UCSD if it's your dream school.

Apply to UCI and UCD as you have a pretty good shot at these schools. If they use affirmative action......
UCI- match
UCD- match
UCSB- slight reach
UCSD- reach (but you never know)
UCSC- safety
UCR- safety
UCM- super safety

You might want to look into Cal Poly too.

EDIT-
From your original post
"but my parents are middle/lower-middle class"
From a later post
"thanks flong. money isn't a problem, so i'll get a private SAT tutor."

So which one is it?

Apply to all the UC's, as you never know. However, UCSD, UCLA, and UC Berkeley are not realistic. The others, however, you have a shot at.

UCB/UCLA: Large Reach
UCSD: Reach-Large Reach
UCI/UCSB/UCD: Slight Reach
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Safe Match-Safety
USC: Reach-Large Reach
Stanford: Large Large Reach
NYU: Reach
JHU: Large Reach
Cornell: Large Reach
Columbia: Large Large Reach
Georgetown: Large Reach

UCSD isn't very hard to get in. I think he's fine for that.

I live in Santa Barbara also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UCLA: Nope
USC: Nope
UCSD: Mostly Nope
UCSB: maybe...?
NYU: Probably No
JHU: No
Columbia: Really No
Cornell: Really No
Georgetown: No
Stanford: Ooh... Should keep the application fee... Buy a good dinner with friends.

You should get some good safeties...

premed isn't a major it's a program
