chances at ucla

4.32 gpa 27 ACT (first attempted w/o studying)
in nhs, csf, interact club member and officer

im pretty sure i can get the act up to a 29 idk about any higher

My preferred major would be biology but i'm willing to take biochem to increase my acceptance rate to UCLA. I've studied both and dont really care which 1 i get i just want to attend UCLA. Would it even be worth the hassel to pick biochem over biology though? I don't know the exact acceptance rate for each but i know bio is a little harder to get into.

I'm not sure about your chances (although your GPA is higher than UCLA's average if I remember correctly.) I would like to point out one thing- in order to apply for a UC, you'll need SAT II scores as well. Not sure if you omitted them on accident or just haven't taken them yet. I think what will set a person apart when applying to these sorts of schools will be the essays since a lot of people look good in numbers and they can't accept everyone.

sat II: 790 chem 760 bio
taking math sat II october 4th
and i also got a 1890 on the sat -_-

interesting. so ur chances can end up going down if u want to study a certain subject? i hope thats not true.

I think your SAT subjects are good enough but not an acceptable SAT I for UCLA. I would retake it and study some of the CR and W startegies before hand. Good luck

well what are the chances if my sat doesn't go up
my act like i said will def go up to at least 28

.........................bump.....................

Last year somebody on CC got into UCLA with SAT I in the 1600s/2400. You'll never know with these holistic admissions.

yea but im asking for the percentage chance i got

Here is the detailed freshman profile for UCLA. You can look your percentages up on it. Be sure the GPA you are using is your UC GPA. http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/pdf/ucla_chart.pdf

yea i've seen that chart before. I still dont know whether or not i should bother choosing biochem or biology as my study. Will the chances of acceptance change much?

I am under the impression for most UC's at least, school my count (i.e. engineering) but not major. "Theatre" may be an exception.

im determined to get a higher act, i hope it'll be enough because i'm not a good essay writer for my apps

i just compared the amount of ap/honors courses i have taken compared to the average applicant at UCLA and it is much less. In my junior and sophomroe yaer i have taken only 4 honors and 1 AP, partly because my school doesn't offer many aps/honors nor does it allow double ups on sciences. If i took as many aps/honors as i could i would have 2 APs and 5 honors (yea thats how anal my school is :( ). Is this going to hurt my chances? Especially since i didn't have much if any of a choice to take honors courses in the areas i wanted to.

It won't hurt you. The UCs give a lot of points for students from low performing schools, ie they don't penalize you for it.

Yeah you have a good chance at UCLA even with your low honors and AP course . Also the fact that you maintained a 4.3 GPA taking only a few honors and AP will should show you get mostly As over Bs. I come from a high school where there are alot of honors and ap are offered and the majority of kids take the gpa raise for granted getting Bs and few As knowing that there GPA will still be higher than a 4.0. Theres even a kid in my AP chem. class with a cumm. GPA of 2.3 aiming for UCs this nov. why i don't even know.....

uhh my school is actually really good. They had a score of 850 on their API...
its just that they dont offer that many honors/aps

so i took the act yesterday and bombed it. Im guessing im getting a 29... I'm planning on retaking it again december (which is going to make my life a living hell for the next few weeks). I guess im destined to be borderline, meaning im gonna have to put forth a lot of effort on my essay. Btw, does anyone know how i can send the score reports from my act december on time so the colleges can see them on time?

^I think you will be fine. Your GPA is more than sufficient and as long as you get an SAT equivalent of 2000+ on your ACT, you will most likely get in. GPA can make up for an average SAT, but an above average SAT will not make up for an average GPA (my case).

@ColumbiaStudent
What's considered a low API school? My school has an 815 API, if that's low does that mean I get points from the UCs? OO

would sat II's make much of a difference?
