In for sure

I got in for mech. engineering for this fall with way lower SATs than those, and my uc 10-12 gpa: 4.25, UW GPA: 3.70, and was in ELC.

I wouldn’t say “for sure” but I would say you have a good chance of being admitted. This is an engineering program you’re applying toward so standards are higher.

Your GPA is average and your SAT score is a tad bit higher than average.

i’d say decent chance. good numbers, but ucla uses a holistic review so those don’t matter as much now as they used to. GPA is the most important. Your weighted is very good, but unweighted could be stronger (I think the avg. unweighted is a high 3.8 or 3.9+). put a lot of time into the personal statement, and definitely emphasize leadership in your essays.

good luck!

From UC Statfinder - UW GPA 3.6-3.8, SAT > 2100 - Admit rate
2008: 46%
2009: 36%

Capped weighted GPA 4.0-4.19, SAT > 2100
2008: 63%
2009: 51%

Average unweighted GPA for admits/enrollees
2008: 3.84/3.78
2009: 3.85/3.79

You need a very strong GPA to be close to being a lock.

You have some pretty strong stats, but yes I think you might have to elaborate on your leadership and how it helped you because you’re in a bunch of ECs but there’s not too much that tells me of your dedication (not that I’m doubting you). Also, try to get more volunteer hours in! It’ll help you look a little more well-rounded, and in my opinion is gratifying just knowing you’re helping others. When I applied, I had a few hundred hours I believe. Good luck! Is your school University High?
Any ideas about your essays yet?

Thanks everyone. I’m not sure if I can significantly improve my volunteer hours, but I might be able to get a job at a math tutoring place. How does that compare?

Still not sure what to write for my essays yet :(

I think it sounds fine, just do what you can. Don’t overstress yourself though, wouldn’t want you to throw away your senior year like I almost felt I did with mine!
Oooh, well I heard this really good piece of advice once on CC. It was something along the lines of think about what stereotype you would typically be put in, & how you use this to your advantage/to make you stronger, or how you break that stereotype. I hope I can find it and link to it later.
I like to tell people to really make the essays not just about their strong points, but about what makes them UNIQUE. You’ll hear it over and over again that schools get tons of strong applicants, but if everyone’s the same, of course they’re going to pick who sticks in their head right? My essays were about my laugh and about juggling two presidencies, if that helps.
