Chances at UCs and other....

Hoping for..

UCSD
UCLA
UC Berkeley
John's Hopkins
Brandeis

cali student attending at troy high
GPA: 4.18W/ around 3.5UW??
SAT:2100
SAII: Math IIC 760 (i thought i got 800..so depressed...)
Biology M 710
Spanish 760
Interned at: UCI Medical Center
Community Service: around 100hr

I'm hoping to major in the medical field...

What are my chances? It's ok to be harsh so tell me the truth please..thanks..

Also..

UCI= safety???

I'll probably retake bio M for sure...i can get 800

as for math iic...not sure..should i retake or not...?

Forgot to mention my AP and IB scores..

AP CompSci-A=4
AP Euro= 3 eek!
AP U.S= 4
AP Bio= 5 yea~
AP Econ= 4
AP Govt= 4

IB Business & Mgmt SL= 5
IB Biology SL=6

Great chances. Good luck. Berkley and ucla are a bit of a reach due to your sat score and gpa. You should try to bring it up by a 100 points. Is the unweighted gpa your uc gpa?

Great chances in UCI or the rest of colleges you haven't mentioned?

And also, what's the difference between unweighted versus uc gpa?

Don't listen to these guys, you are in great shape, even for UCLA and UCB.
I think you will probably get into one of those, and into UCSD and UCI as well.

What is your UC GPA? that's all that matters (soph and junior year, only 4 classes with AP weight, academic classes only)

Just found my transcript...

NONWEIGHTED

Acad GPA (9-12) 3.6364
Acad GPA(10-12) 3.4634
Total GPA (9-12) 3.6757

how do you calculate a uc gpa? ap/honors classes during soph/junior year only in math science history and english?

Good chances, for all schools mentioned. Assuming that you are a CA resident of course. Bringing the SAT up a little would make you a better candidate.

netddos:

UCB/UCLA: Match
UCSD: Safe Match
UCI: Safety

netddos - Troy High (Magnet) school at Fullerton, CA right?

yes it is.

Here's the basic admitted student stats for the schools in question:

UC Berkeley--GPA 3.93 UW 4.29 W, average SAT scores of 1325 (645/680)
UCLA--average GPA 3.87 UW 4.19 W, average SAT scores of 1289 (629/660)
UCSD--average GPA 3.65 UW 3.98 W, average SAT of 1239 (593/646)
UCI--probably around average GPA 3.42 UW 3.63 W, average SAT 1150 (565/585)
John Hopkins--average GPA 3.67 UW, average SAT of 1386 (680/706)
Brandeis--average GPA 3.85 UW, average SAT of 1330 (660/670)

Since you have an average GPA of 3.67 UW and 4.17 W, and a SAT score of 1400 (700/700), the normal stats would be

UCB and Brandeis--Reach
UCLA and John Hopkins--Match
UCSD--Safe Match
UCI--Safety

But the problem is you have no ECs at all other than the one volunteer service listed, and also your grades are declining. If you have decent ECs and just didn't list them here and if you can get your first semester senior year's courses up to the 3.6+ range, then I would stick with the predictions above, but if you have no ECs and do no better than 3.4 work this semester and the first semester of your senior year, then I predict the following:

UCB and Brandeis--no chance
UCLA and John Hopkins--Reach
UCSD--Slight Reach
UCI--Match

just curious..

are my non-weighted grades basically equal to that of UC GPA?

if not, how do i calculate them?

average admit for ucsd is a 4.01 capped weighted gpa and a 1306 old sat.

<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsd.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucsd.html</a></p>

average admit for ucla is a 4.17 capped weighted gpa and a 1353 old sat.

<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucla.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles/camp_profiles_ucla.html</a></p>

I believe these are 2004 or 2005 stats. the 2006 stats are very very similar. ucla average admit gpa is 4.17 in 2006. ucsd average admit gpa is 4.03 in 2006. SAT'S at both schools are approx 2000.

If you weighted GPA is capped:

UC Berkeley: Match
UCLA: Match
UCSD: Safe Match

Depends if your weighted GPA is capped. You stated your unweighted is a 3.5 and weighted is a 4.18. is the 4.18 capped weighted or just weighted? if its capped weighted you look very good to get into the top three uc's. but if your capped weighted gpa is lower, then that could change the chances that i gave you.

If not capped, chances look more like:

UC Berkeley: Slight Reach
UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match

Remember uc's calculate your gpa by 10th-12th grades. If your UW GPA is 3.47 during this time, your uc capped weighted gpa would make uc berkeley and ucla a slight reach and ucsd a match because of your high sat.

I don't think the grades on my transcript are capped...but not really sure...

i'm trying to calculate my own uc gpa..let me see if i got it right...

-i only add classes listed under a-g list
-i only add extra point to the classes designated as honors by uc(capped at max 8 honors classes)
-add them all up and divide by the number of classes

lastly, do i add classes from 10-12th or 10-11th?

also only use 10th-12th grade i believe, although you might want to check.

according to here..
<a href="http://www.lghs.net/guid/senior/indivSeniorInfoNight/27CalculatingUCCSUGPA.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.lghs.net/guid/senior/indivSeniorInfoNight/27CalculatingUCCSUGPA.pdf</a></p>

it says 10-12th so i'll go by that

edit:

humm this is directly from uc website..

"Grades 9, 10 and 11
All grades for all academic courses completed in grades 9, 10 and 11 must be reported. If a course is repeated, both the initial and repeated course and grades earned for both must be shown. Grades earned in the ninth grade will not be used in the GPA calculation for admission purposes."

ok this is confusing...which one do i go by

For those who want more info on how the UCs calculate GPAs and how they treat combinations of GPA and test scores (both SATs and ACTs), check out this link:

<a href="http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/scholarship_reqs.html</a></p>

I believe that for most students (especially ones that take few AP and IB honors courses), capped and non-capped is the same. Capped only comes into play when you retake a class you failed (then the retaken class can't be counted as more than a "C" regardless of the actual grade), and if you get an A+ in a school that does plus/minus grading. Then this A+ can't count for 4.3--it's a 4.0 unless it's an AP or an IB class--then it's a 5.0 (not a 5.3). Also, capping means you can only count 8 honors courses for purposes of adding the extra 1 point per class to the normal grade points you get when you determine the GPA.

so..

do i factor 12th grade in or just count 10th and 11th?
