Calm. Down. It's really quite all right. I know it's a little nerve racking; after all, most of us are in the same boat here. However, you need not feel like its the end of the world and you have to choose what you're going to eat for your Last Supper.

I agree with z2: UCLA and UCB are reaches because of the huge number of people applying to them. Even in NE with its "city upon a hill" mentality, we recognise the greatness of the UC network. So you'll be fighting with qualified NE-ers who have only heard of UCLA and UCB.

However, you are, in essence, a very solid candidate who is better at taking tests. In the end, it comes down to chance. Don't base your self-worth on the verdict a nameless person who has never met you places on a few pieces of paper that say nothing about your true complexity and personality.

I had pretty excellent ECs + essays. I got into UCLA but not cal. I think cal emphasizes GPA more so than LA.

Truthfully, I came from a very competitive high school, so I had really had a warped view of the quality of students I would find here. Back at home almost all my friends had 1500+ SAT scores. I'm at UCLA now and out of the hundreds of people I have met since I got here, I don't know of one with a higher SAT score than me, not even the engineers I know. Truthfully, the people here on average aren't very intellectual or intelligent (though a lot of people are hardcore studiers). There is a guy on my hall with a 1000 SAT score. So you never know.

Hmmm, I don't know about your chances at any UC. Your SAT I score is inadequate, and 6 AP's is a little weak for any college's standards. I feel bad being the first one to tell you this. As a college counselor, I suggest beefing up your EC's to hit some sort of Community College. I'm sure there are some in Calfornia. But hey, don't get discoraged, what do I know?

Brandnew2, thanx. Did you get into all the UCs except Cal? And velocity56, your post is absolutely absurd. My SAT I score is inadequate?! My ACT score converted (1420) is above the 75th percentile at every single UC except maybe Cal and UCLA. UCSBs range in US News is 1080-1300, so Im way above that. You obviously don't know what yer talking about... Anyone else?

no flopsy, I'm not from Ohio. However I am on your facebook friend list, I was listed as your only friend at UCLA for a while (heh). and I've seen you several times on campus but I don't think I've ever talked to you in person.

and yea, I got into all the UCs except cal.

If you would like a semi-rural, large town atmosphere Davis is a good school, but it depends on what you might want to study. If you like large Cities Davis is about 20 minutes from state capital, Sacramento and no one would consider Sacramento a big city compared to LA or SF or SD.

I would say that with below average GPA and above average SATs, it will come down to your essay. So focus on that. I have a son at a UC and I've taught at 2. These are not, as someone said, the most intellectual schools I know. There is a tremendous range with comprehensive review.
