Hi, thanks for reading in advance. I’m going to be applying in a couple of months, so I just want to know if these schools are in my reach because I’d love to go to them. Here are my stats
UC GPA(still have a month left, but basically final): 4.2
APs: APUSH, AP Lang/Comp, AP Bio (11th)
Senior year courseload: AP Physics, AP Comp Sci, AP Gov, AP Econ, AP Calc BC, AP Lit
GPA note: I did trash fresh year, got 5 Bs and ever since then have had an upward trend(2 Bs soph year, none junior year) with increasingly class rigor. I only have 5 classes this year, because my school didn’t give me one so i hope that doesn’t make me look lazy or anything.
ACT: 33
SAT: Not planning on taking
ECs: Varsity Tennis - just started junior year will also play senior year
Speech and Debate(4 years) - captain of team (have a good true story on how debate help me conquer my stuttering)
Boy Scouts (4 years) - Eagle Scout
Volunteering at local hospital(4 years) - work in marketing area, work with computers daily
National Honor Society (Volunteer Coordinator)
Piano (2 years)
150+ volunteer hours through boy scouts and hospital
Key Club (50+ hours)
Ethnicity: Asian Indian
Intended Major: Primarily computer science, backup econ
You look like a strong candidate. Are you in state or out of state?
I applied and got into UCI, UCSB, and UCSD. I would say UCI and UCSB are probably safeties for you are–especially if you in state. UCSD is fairly competitive for certain majors, but shouldn’t be impossible. I didn’t apply to UCLA, but I know it is very selective. Maybe someone else on here can comment on UCLA?
Also, might I suggest you look into UCSC? Even with its party school reputation, I’ve heard great things about its CS program.
I’m in state! Thanks, I will definitely look into UCSC then. May I ask your GPA and SAT/ACT that you got into those with? I’m just a little worried because although I am above the average freshman profile, I’ve heard that CS is harder than the average major.
Yeah it definitely is a bit more competitive, but CA tries to stay loyal to its in state students. I have a 4.0 UW GPA (I don’t remember my UC GPA) and 2200 SAT and got into all the UC’s I applied to (I’m in state): Biophysics at UCSD (which I was told is impacted), Bioengineering at UCI and UCD, and I don’t remember my UCSB and UCSC majors (biochemistry??). I also was offered Regents at all of those. Sometimes departments offer separate profiles. You could try googling “student profiles of UCSC computer science,” etc.
Ok, thanks so much for the info
Of course, best of luck!
P.S. As much as I love CA, don’t be afraid to look out of state. You are a good student, and your stats should be able to get you some merit aid. Unfortunately, CA sorta screws us over financially (my largest merit aid in CA was $8,000/year; my largest merit aid OOS was $31,000/year). Rowan University, SUNY Stony Brook and Buffalo, Mississippi State University, University of Minnesota, Missouri S&T, Georgia Tech are some not selective to moderately selective schools that have good CS reputations. You should be able to find plenty more
If finances are not a concern (either you have enough money to pay full tuition or you expect to receive a lot of need-based aid), then live the CA dream!
