I thought my stats were good enough, but I was reading the decisions thread and people got rejected with higher stats than me for comp sci, so I’m a little scared
Really good UC GPA and pretty good ACT. You’ll probably get in. What’s your uncapped UC GPA/course rigor? That’s important as well. You have a great chance though.
Thanks for the response. My uncapped is also a 4.2. I took no AP’s soph year, because I had a scheduling conflict. I took 3 AP’s Junior year - I attempted to take 4 but there was also a scheduling conflict. I mentioned this in the additional comments. This year, I’m taking 5 AP’s: AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP gov/econ, AP lit, and AP Comp Sci Principles. Also, do you think essays can help me get into comp sci? I have pretty strong essays but most aren’t really relevant to comp sci.
I’m no expert (I’m actually applying right now too!), so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think essays can definitely have a sizable effect, especially if they’re on the cusp, but if I were you I’d somehow try to incorporate CS into at least 2 of the essays. i’m looking at your ECs and none of them are really CS related except for the Web/App Development club. I’d definitely talk about this club in my essay(s).
Shoot, I don’t really know what else to talk about though! I just realized that I wanted to do computer science as my major recently
Hopefully they see that I’m passionate about my EC’s, even though most aren’t comp sci related.
I believe your UC GPA is good, and as for your ACT, it’s definitely good for UCSB but a higher score can better your chances. Although it’s better for your ECAs to be in line with your intended major, it’s also fine if they aren’t. Some students simply know what they want beforehand, and there’s nothing wrong with not being one of those students. I think you have a good chance; I wouldn’t worry too much on the other applicants statistics because it’s always a case to case basis—there never is a “formula” for acceptance.
Good luck.
