Chances at UCSD (#1), other UC's and Cal Poly SLO (AS EE)

I'm a senior and a middle eastern male located in southern california.

I want to apply to UCSD as an Electrical Engineer. I'm also considering many other UC's, and Cal Poly SLO.

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 4.00
GPA - Weighted: 4.29 UC GPA
Class Rank: School doesnt rank. I was eligible for ELC through my school, but i didnt make it according to the UC's... even with a 4.29... I think its because i took 12 academic courses in 10-11th grade, so all those 4.0's brought me away from a higher UC GPA, which other students at my school must have obtained.
Class Size: ~500 (less?)

SAT I Math: 740
SAT I Critical Reading: 530
SAT I Writing: 600
SAT I TOTAL: 1870 =[ (cause i cant read...)

SAT II Math Level 2 (IIC): 770
SAT II Biology - M: 730
SAT II Physics: 670

AP Tests:
AP Biology - 5
AP Psychology - 5
AP Physics B - 4
AP Physics C - (senior year)
AP Calculus BC - (senior year)

(yea pretty empty here on out...)

Extracurriculars :

Math Club for 2 years (part of math honors society)
E-Club for 3 years

Leadership positions: none...

Volunteer/Service Work:
50hrs at an enviornmental/nature center
~30hrs at library
~30hrs as a tutor (free)
All those hours were done this summer/this year...

Honors and Awards:
Passed the AMC12 and invited to take the AIME
Audubon YES! Award (for comm service at nature center)

I can include other details if needed (like my course schedule).

You look good for acceptance in general, but I am not sure about that particular major. Pretty sure you can get in with those stats. I think you should have had more ECs. This is coming from someone accepted last year. It also depends on the strength of the app pool~

Slight reach/match

u have a good shot, if u get that sat up theres a very good chance u can get in

Yea I really screwed up =. I should have done wayyy more EC wise.

I guess I consider myself very close to the border for UCSD. I even feel like getting a 1950 this weekend could help me. Do you guys think that I would actually have a better chance for admission as an ENGINEER major with a 1950 SAT instead? It really sucks becuase the part of the SAT that kills me is the reading. I can't read! hahaha!

Also, if I am denied admission, does anyone know how that thing works where you appeal and get teacher recommendations?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Appeals within the UC system are only considered when you have done things that were left out of the original application. Appeal rates are extremely low. Search around UCSD's site for appeals. Teacher recs are only given when requested. Last year, UCB asked me for a rec and some aditional information in Jan-Feb and used that information in my admission decision. Luckily I got in =D.

zero786, don't worry about it. You have a very high chance of getting into UCSD EE.

If I were you, I would consider applying to Berkeley's EECS program.

you have 6986 academic points, your community service isnt spread out enough to count for any points... you have no leadership points... you will probably get 300 award points... so that comes out to 7286

did both your parents have more then 2 years in college?
any strong personal troubles? (deaths in immideate family)
is your income less than 60,000 or 30,000?
do you work more than 20 hours a week during the school year?

if you answered no to all of those... you will not get in based on the 2005 cutoff (and 2007 is MUCH higher...)

sorry... it's more than a reach at this point unless you answered yes to those questions...

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/kisasong/UCSDComprehensive.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.geocities.com/kisasong/UCSDComprehensive.htm</a> to calculate

wow. you have a 4.0 unweighted gpa and u didn't make ELC out of 500 students? You go to one hell of a competitive school. So...15 people have unweighted 4.0?! As far as ur acceptance, from my opinion, you're in for sure. It has a lot to do with how good ur school is, which I'm assuming is pretty darn good if it has 500 2007 graduating students. From my school, people with your stats got into berkeley, not to mention here of course.

gl =) n hope everything goes well for you

hypo... it has NOTHING to do with your school...

well.. actually it does, if you go to a very bad school (4th or 5th quintile) you get some points... 300 to be exact...

poor people have an advantage here.

Ur right. I know the points system doesn't give anything to going to a "good school", but I have suitemates who are valedictorians of their school and only got into UCLA at best. And the graduating class is really big too. So I'm really thinking school has to do with it. There are so many people from my school with a 3.6 uc capped and 4.0 uc uncapped with like a 600 satII average and 1800 get into ucsd. That's no where near the "true average". I'm just trying to get zero to be more confident :)

dont give him false hope though!

zero:

Getting into the Jacobs School of Engineering is generally more difficult than getting in to UCSD in general. The same is true with the engineering schools at at UCB and UCLA and likely some other UCs. Your GPA is high but your SAT scores are somewhat low for engineering so hopefully your next SATs (assuming you're doing the December test) will be higher.

I don't understand what you said about ELC since it's the school that submits the top 4% names. Are you saying your name was submitted by your school but somehow rejected by the UC system?

Make sure you apply to some other UCs since some others are easier to get into. Try UCSB, UCD, UCI, UCSC, and others if you're interested. UCB and UCLA are generally more difficult to be accepted to than UCSD.

Any guesses what the cutoff will be for 2007 engineering applicants?

good luck with that...

hm...
who knew you cant post a short comment... interesting...

Wow thanks a lot everyone... that was a lot of feedback!

OK first, points... I see how you got 6986, but I also added 500 because I have taken over 40 a-g semesters of courses. I will have over 100 hours of comm service, so that should be another 150. My awards arent that great, so I don't think I can give myself anything for that. Even though I did get 1st place at this math competition yesterday where high schools in the Los Angeles (South Bay) area met to compete in a league called the Bay Math League. Its the first time I have ever been to one of these, and I'm really excited to have tied for 1st with a perfect score. Oh yea, there about 200-300 students from many high schools in South Bay competing. We all gathered at North Hollywood High, and the event was over there. From my school, only a friend of mine who is insanely smart and I got perfect scores. He got into Perdu, is applying to MIT, Stanford, Cal, etc...

ANYWAY (sorry about my excitement... I've never done so well at anything!), my total points are 7636.

As far as my SAT goes... I took it again in November, but I don't know how thats going to turn out... I am not taking it in December. I wanted to wait till the 28th to put my latest scores on my app in case they are higher, but I am too afraid the "server will crash" as everyone says.

And for the ELC... my school selected me as eligible for ELC, and I received a letter on Sept 7 stating this... <a href="http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4286/elcxt5.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4286/elcxt5.jpg</a>
To me it kinda makes sense that I didnt make it because I took too many semesters. I had 24 semesters from 10th-11th. If you have a 4.0 UW, the more semesters of courses you take, the closer to 4.0 you get...

If I don't get into UCSD, I am considering UCI, UCD, UCSB, and Cal Poly SLO. I've already realized I don't stand a chance at UCLA or Cal, but I kind of felt I did for UCSD.

Can't edit anymore, but Purdue** (i think...loL) which was his backup

Also, does anyone kno if #5 is right in this thread...
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=260981%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=260981</a>
You can read what I said in #6 to know why I am curious =P. I am sure some other people were wondering the same thing as well.

Unless something has changed recently, that post is correct about the tiered admission to UCSD and the singular admission to UCLA. At UCSD one is first admitted to UCSD then the app is reviewed by the Jacobs school which may or may not accept the person. If they're rejected by Jacobs, they may still pursue a major at UCSD that's not in the Jacobs school.

A Quickie!! What's the lowest ( MINIMUM) score needed to apply to the UCSD??
