Chances at UF?

I'm applying within the next couple of months to UF, and I'm getting really worried about my identical twin and I's chance of getting into UF.

My stats:
Unweighted GPA: 3.444 <- Didn't do so well first two years of high school
Weighted GPA: 5.444 <- Inflated from AP/IB classes
SAT: 1930 (R: 600 M: 720 WR: 610) (Retaking in October)
- Math level I: 760
- Bio M: 700
ACT: ??? (Taking in september)
APs passed: AP English Lang(3), AP English Lit(3), AP Biology(5), AP Computer Science(5), and AP US History(3).
Clubs: FBLA and NHS.
Academic Awards:
- 4th place UF programming competition 2011 <- Not 'officially' affiliated with UF, it was hosted by its programming team though.
- 1st place FIU programming competition 2011
- 1st place UF programming competition 2012
- 1st place FIU programming competition 2012
- 4th place FBLA-Management information systems-2012
My schedule for senior year will be: AP chem, AP physics, AP psychology, AP statistics, DE English, Regular PE, Honors Networking 3, honors american gov & economics
Volunteering: Internship and a local science museum, going to start at a local hospital this month. Current hours: ~100
Also notable: I got to "take part" in computer science research at a local college from january-may, and I currently train with their programming team.
(Also I think this is important, I dropped out of IB for my senior year so I could try other classes. I know this might not be smart, but I really wanted to try some new stuff)

My brother's stats:
Unweighted GPA: 3.19 <- Also didn't do well first two years of HS
Weighted GPA: 4.9 <- Again inflated from AP/IB
SAT: 1970 (R: 620 W: 670 M: 680) (Also retaking in oct)
- Math level I: 660
- Bio M: 690
ACT: ??? (Taking with me in september)
APs passed: AP English Lang(3), AP English Lit(3), AP Biology(4), AP Computer Science(5), and AP US History(3).
Clubs: FBLA and NHS.
Academic Award:
- 4th place FBLA-Cyber Security-2011
Schedule for senior year:Guitar 2, Networking 1 honors, DE American Gov/Ap Macro, Ap statistics, Ap psychology, DE writing and rhetoric, Ap chemistry
Volunteering: Identical to mine, except around 70 volunteer hours.
(He also dropped out of IB with me)

Any input (what we can improve, our chances, etc) is greatly appreciated.

Weighted and Unweighted don’t mean anything by HS standards. It’s all dependent on UF’s GPA calculator.

You need to determine yours and your twins UF GPA:
Honors classes are worth .5 more, and AP classes are worth 1.0 more. Meaning an A in an honors class is a 4.5, and an A in an AP is a 5.0 (not a 6.0 like they do at some schools). A “B” in an honors class is a 3.5, and a “B” in an AP is worth a 4.0.

81% of applicants with a 4.0 and 4.0+ UF weighted GPA got in. Source: [University of Florida - Admissions](Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida)

Your SAT’s are solid, both of you. But if you want to retake them for a chance at a higher score, by all means go ahead. I literally JUST got off the phone with the office of admissions asking if they take the writing into account-they do. They take all 3 portions of the SAT equally, and from the 2012 profile, you’re kissing the brink of the 72.4% acceptance with that 1930.

Your EC’s are exemplary. Your brothers- not as much. Don’t mention that you dropped out of IB on your application…what UF doesn’t know can’t hurt you.

There’s no reason to wait to apply, as UF is first come-first serve. If you apply after November first, you’re only accepted based on space availability. You can send in your SAT scores after you send in the application.

For your essay, I’d recommend writing about how you have an identical twin (like how cool is that)! Discuss how you and your twin have overcome trials and tribulations in order to achieve your academic prowess you have today. Discuss how during your competitions, he has been with you every step of the way. Discuss how you are driven together to succeed more than you would individually. Idk if any of that is true, but you can make it work. One thing to remember, though, is to have an application individual of your twins. You can’t have the same essay.

BornToBeaGator, thank you so much for your feedback, I truly appreciate it.

I’ve got a question though, do you think that my brother’s ECs will still be enough to have a good chance at being accepted into UF?

Also in regards to calculating our UF gpas, would classes like “Business computer programming” count as academic? Do all APs/IBs count? Thanks!

“Only academic subjects are used in the calculation — English, math, social sciences, sciences and foreign languages (freshmen are required to have successfully completed 2 consecutive units of a foreign language).”

Source: [Ask UF – How will UF compute my high school GPA?](http://www.questions.ufl.edu/admissions/freshman/15/)

Business computer programming wouldn’t fall into any of those…yet I haven’t found an AP class to date that does not fall into any of those categories. Social Sciences I assume is just like social studies. Anything that doesn’t fall into a CTE or P.E. class is an academic class at my school. History classes are also academic, I believe.

But your brother doesn’t have that many EC’s. From what he does have, if he’s involved with those clubs yet doesn’t hold any leadership positions…at least it’s something. He competed in an FBLA competition, and he’s in 2 clubs (NHS and FBLA). From what the UF OoA told me, their looking for people who seize all opportunities available to them. And you can indicate that in your additional information section.

For example:
If you take 6 AP classes a year, and don’t have any work experience. No wonder you don’t have a job, you put academics first. That’s something you can indicate to them.

At the end of the day, it’s about doing as much as you can with what you’re given. Let’s say you can’t get to a job because you don’t have time or a car, but on the weekends you get your parents to take you to do volunteer work. That’s solid.
