UF: Match (if the 30-31 materializes then low match)

Any recommendations or weak spots that I can improve?

You’re credentials are good. Your main concern for now seems to be the SAT & ACT. Make sure you get that 30-31 ACT! Also, I would try to score around 700 in either reading or math, and above a 600 on the other. I got a 620 in reading, but a 740 in math, so I made for what I lacked in reading with a great math score. Also, I don’t know why you got a 560 on writing, but you should try for AT LEAST 600 on it, but if it’s because you’re slacking with the writing section, DON’T. It wouldn’t be good to appear lazy.

If you get a good SAT score & your desired ACT score, you should get in. Also, my HS college counselor told me that UF is biased towards IB Diploma students who are FL residents. If you fall in to both categories, with your credentials, you’re golden.

Parchment.com declared with my current scores that I’d have a 66% chance at getting in with my current score. It also said if I got a 29 on my ACT I would be boosted up to a 73% chance. Does being OOS possibly deviate chances on getting in?

Unfortunately, it does affect your chances a lot. UF’s student body is only 3% OOS. So, UF highly favors FL residents, much more than many other state universities. I’ve been at UF since August 2012, and of the countless new people I’ve met, only 1 was OOS. I do however know a few people who didn’t not go to school in Florida, but received in-state tuition for various reasons (parents worked in Florida, got Florida Pre-Paid as a child, etc.).

You see, I have that too! My parents work in state, own real-estate… Im pretty sure I can qualify for IST, therefore I can be ISS (? Is that right)… Can you ask those friends how they got qualified for that? Aka what did UF look at to qualify they for being an ISS?

Thanks!

And WOW! It totally does make a difference… With my current SAT score (m660, R600, W560) and if I can qualify for ISS it says I have an 84 % chance of making it in and if I got a 29 on my ACT I would have a 88% chance of making it in!!! :open_mouth: I guess that now changes my question… HOW can I apply for being an ISS even though I completed High School outside the State of Florida? My dad owns real estate properties, owns multiple businesses and gets money from it in FL and pays many taxes in Florida.

Adam:

My son raised his SAT scores 100 points the second time he took the exam, with zero studying, so mere familiarity with the exam should help you.

However, it seems that every year, kids with good stats, for some reason, do not get into UF, even though their stats, and even ECs, are clearly superior to others who do get in.

So the process is very subjective.

Thats true Florida Dad… I’ve seen the unfortunate kids who seem very much qualified yet do not get in. Yet on the Parchment website, I really haven’t seen anyone in the top 10% with a 3.9 GPA that would get rejected unless they have an absolutely terrible SAT/ACT. Yet yes, I have heard many stories like valedictorians not making in into that school. I know the admissions process is holistic, so as long as I can get good letters of rec, and write a good essay, i feel like I can very well qualify.

I never imagined UF to be more protectionistic than UNC…

But I can tell you this much: UF is very irregular, so it isn’t a safety for anyone.

-.- I know, so I’ve heard. Would it have anything to do with Affirmative Action? I’ve heard all the sob stories of not getting into UF. How strange!

Can anyone answer the In state tuition question/ being an ISS?

Can’t answer the ISS question, but I’d say you have a good chance. UF loves ECs. As far as I can tell, you have numerous and very good ECs. Raising your standardized test scores could help you a lot. If you aren’t granted in-state, you’ll need better stats than most people. I’d shoot for 1300 SAT and 30-31 ACT. Good luck!

Are you sure UF doesn’t care about the writing score on the SAT? I knew certain schools didn’t, but, the more selective the school is, the more likely it is to care about the writing subscore on the SAT.

@AdamDemamp Hey. I got into UF with the following stats. I will attend USF because I was offered a better financial aid package to attend there.
Rank: 2/450
GPA: 3.94/4.63
SAT/ACT: 1710/25
Decent ECs: Varsity Soccer for 4 years. NHS. BETA Club. Key Club. Steering Committee. Math League. Robotics. Church Youth Group. 300 hours community service.
First Generation College Student.
Dual Enrollment Program (Graduating High School with a Diploma and with an AA Degree in General Studies from the local cc.)
I have very weak test scores. I know. I believe it’s lack of preparation and overconfidence. I took it yesterday in order to get the higher bright futures award. I believe I got a 30-32 composite. (I studied for 3 weeks. On previous ACTs, I studied the week of or not at all)

Therefore, you have a very high chance of getting into UF.

Adam, there are usually 3 ways in which a person can establish themselves as a FL resident: FL Driver’s License, FL Vehicle License Plate, & FL Voter Registration. There is an additional category for non-US citizens. If you can prove residency through at least 2 of these methods you should be fine. If not, call the admission’s office, and ask what ways you can establish yourself as a FL resident. Do whatever it takes, it saves over $20k per year, & it’s easier to get admitted.

On my own application, I put the following info (which got me in-state tuition):
-dependent person (so I used my dad’s info to establish residency)
-my/dad’s address
-dad’s driver’s license info
-dad’s car’s license plate info

I couldn’t input his voter registration info because my dad couldn’t find it (he is registered in FL though).

If you are unable to this, call the admissions office ASAP, and ask them for help. If you wanna go to UF, this is really important since it makes it A LOT easier to be accepted AND decreases tuition costs by over $22k. I don’t think you’ll be able to go through the same route I did (I went to HS in FL, and lived here since 2002), but from what you told me, you should be able to find an alternate route to establishing FL residency.

Good Luck! Let me know how it works out!
